If Scotland can secede, so can Texas
Yahoo ^ | September 10, 2014 | Risk Newman

Global markets are suddenly jittery about the prospect that Scotland, after 307 years as part of the United Kingdom, could become its own country if Scots vote for independence in a Sept. 18 referendum. If proud but tiny Scotland can do it — which polls suggest is a distinct possibility — then America’s 28th state, Texas, will certainly take notice.

If any state is fed up with the rest of America, it’s Texas. Republican Gov. Rick Perry floated the idea of seceding from the United States in 2009, though he later backpedaled. A petition for Texas to “withdraw" from the United States, lodged on the White House’s “We the People” Web page, gathered 125,000 signatures before voting closed in 2013. A group called the Texas Nationalist Movement has nearly 190,000 likes on Facebook.

I do not know how many regions there will be. It will likely be more than two, but who knows. Geographically, how would California unite with New York when you would have another nation or two or three in between?

Noticed Soros is going ape crazy trying to stop Scottish independence. Based on that fact alone, it must be a good idea.

“No thanks, we need Texas to have some semblance of sanity.”

Do you honestly think John Boehner is such?

I want Cruz to be President of Texas.

“We’ll bring Jeff Sessions with us.”

Please don’t.

“Senator Jeff Sessions of Alabama, for example, said he was sure that Mr. Holder would be “a responsible legal officer and not a politician.””

America deserves to have Cruz as president. Like our Founding Fathers, he is the embodiment of courage and freedom.

Nothing personal, but your map is a joke. The idea that Harry Reid’s Nevada is a “free state” and the most free state in the union (AZ) is in the “Socially Liberal Mix” zone should point you to a new map source.

To secede means to peacefully withdraw. To rebel is armed revolution. That's why we learn about the American Revolution and not the American Secession.

I wonder what it will be called when the "progressive and lib-burl" parts of the nation just rot away into various iterations of Detroit?

It's a basic principle of contract law. When the Federalists of New England opposed the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, they argued that the new territory would so change the nature of the Union that unanimous consent would be required, not just a constitutional amendment or an act of Congress. In this, they were echoing Madison. Jefferson rejected that argument, instead taking up the argument of his enemy Hamilton that the acquisition of new territory was simply a function of nationhood.

Lincoln took a more moderate position. As a practicing lawyer, he understood that the instrument through the Union would be dissolve and reformed would be a constitutional amendment. Part 1 would dissolve the Union, Part 2 would reform the Union with those states that chose to remain, and Part 3 would be some boilerplate authorizing Congress to enact legislation supporting all this. The amendment could be proposed via Congress or an Amendments Convention, and ratification would be via state legislatures or state ratifying conventions, as Congress so chose under the terms of Article V. For ratification, three-fourths of the states, not unanimous consent, would be sufficient. Lincoln asked the Southern states to return their representatives and senators to Congress to negotiate an amicable divorce. The events at Fort Sumter changed the terms of the discussion. It would now be negotiated in the Court of Arms.

I would imagine that Texas could leave if a constitutional amendment, ratified by three-fourths of the states, permitted an amicable divorce.

“So, you think that it’s OK for Texas to walk away from the Union? What’s to add constructive to crazy? Texas did that twice. “

Twice? Texas ‘walked away from the Union’ only once, in 1861. It was an independent Republic from 1836 to 1846 and had never before been part of the Union.

Unless by ‘twice’ you mean when Texas seceded from Mexico. It always fascinates me how people can celebrate Texas seceding from Mexico, the 13 American colonies seceding from the United Kingdom, and then at the same time act as if secession is unthinkable. Go figure.

Finally, its the spirit of Texans and our history. Not just one culture, but the Texas blend. Mexico has been trying to invade us forever and we know they will keep coming. Some are bad people but most are good. Once here, the good ones add value to our culture.

That sounds great!

But back in the real world, Texas Hispanics vote for Democrats. Where there's enough of them, Democrats win.

Look at your border congressional districts. Look at the counties Obama won.

Not me. If Texans want to secede, so be it.

Personally, I prefer expurgation. The entire north east from and including New York and north and east should be purged from the union.

Taken as a whole, they are no longer American and are infact Neoeuropa

“But those industries would be burned to the ground. Sherman taught us the formula.”

That was a long time ago.

More recently in 08 and 12, the yankee states voted for an anti-war weakling to be its commander in chief.

A far cry from the days of Sherman.

Nonetheless, if the USA decided to resurrect Sherman, Texas would just utter three words: mutually assured destruction.

I started my post with "nothing personal" - and I was just pointing out the current inaccuracies, not predicting the future.

I was not taking it too seriously. In fact, I want everyone to know what a terrible place AZ is, so they consider moving someplace ELSE. I see too many Kalifornia and MinneSunni license plates here already.

It tells me a lot about the people that do act as though it is unthinkable.

A certain George III and his crew come to mind...

The only thing that could save Texas and/or the nation is if congress stripped the citizenship from the children of illegals that were born here.

But the chance of that happening and a president signing it... about 0%
