If he had ever read the Bible (which we can not assume is the case), he would have read about the religion of Baal among the Philistines, who were religiously motivated to kill (sacrifice = "make holy") their own children to appease their gods.

The Spanish found human sacrifice occurring as regular religious practice when they conquered the Aztecs, and they were thousands of miles removed. This is built into human nature, and it is only our Judaeo-Christian civilization and way of seeing reality that keeps us from it as well.
