Few critics as Nevada mulls Tesla tax breaks

Critics say Nevada lawmakers are gambling with taxpayers’ money, but they clearly were in the minority Wednesday night as legislators moved forward with an unprecedented package of up to $1.3 billion in incentives they hope to approve in the days ahead to bring Tesla Motors’ $5 billion battery factory to the state.

Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval urged legislators in the two Democrat-controlled houses to seize an “extraordinary opportunity” to land the electric car maker’s “gigafactory” and the tens of thousands of jobs he said would help pull Nevada from the worst economic crisis in state history.

Legislative leaders, who convened in a special session, expected to approve the package of tax breaks and other incentives by Thursday night or Friday. The leader of the Assembly’s Republicans, Pat Hickey of Reno, was among those predicting it would pass by an “overwhelming” margin. …

What better place to gamble than Nevada? It is all about the money, isn’t that right dingy Harry?

I’ve had to point out to lots of FReepers that this major boon for our Silver State economy has been engineered by NORTHERN Nevada (Carson City, after all, is our capitol, not Las Vegas). Northern (mainly Republican, as is our Governor) and southern (Union-driven Harry Reid country) Nevada are basically two different states. In just about every way.

I just love how the “progressives” view not collecting money as a “loss.” So if Tesla goes elsewhere, they still wouldn’t get the money they claim they would “loose.” You would think, reading about this deal that the State of Nevada was going to open the state’s treasury and give Tesla a loan.

You mean this is not crony capitalism with all those tax breaks? why not level the playing field? Good for Tesla, good for everyone, everywhere—Nevada, Californication, Maine, Alabama.....

Nevada has no state income tax first of all, and laughably few regulations when you compare it to the nightmare that is California. We also have sunshine almost every day, a mostly conservative outlook, lots of inexpensive land, and more actual freedom than pretty much every other state. Heck, you can still smoke in a bar without having to go outside. What’s not to like?

They tried this BS here on the Lake Michigan coast of our state, the deal was a waste of time and money.

You forgot the most important unique thing in our state. You can go to the gas station at 4AM on Easter Sunday and buy a bottle of Everclear. Do that in any other state. Also boundless public land, if you want to walk, or drive "that way", no problem...

I’d agree....Nevada is definitely two different states. It’s like trying to compare Reno and Vegas.

Well, they will after the taxpayers have to pay for the huge boondoggle when Tesla fails...and it will...just like all of the other green energy “wet dreams.”

“when Tesla fails...and it will...just like all of the other green energy “wet dreams.”” Yep.

I have been rather melancholy about the whole green energy movement. The battery and photovoltaic cell have been with us in the vicinity of 100 to 140 yrs, and to have a game changer for those two IMHO is way more difficult than Edison inventing the light bulb.

But their might be light at the end of tunnel, no pun intended.

The Pietro Battery might be the magic bullet. Dramatically lower charge times with 5 times the capacity, I find it interesting she and her team thought in "3D".

http://www.popularmechanics.com/science/energy/next-generation/how-to-make-battery-power-more-powerful-17085182

And then, their is "Graphene"... http://vimeo.com/51873011

So imagine a Tesla with a Pietro Battery and a Graphene Ultra Capacitor for acceleration kick, with 5 times the range ( lets say 500 miles between changes ). That is a game changer.

FWIW, I find Musk abrasive, but he has a car that works, I don't know if this battery plant is the answer with these breakthroughs potentially on the horizon. Can he retool quickly? I don't know, his other option would be to buy-in to these or some other partnering options.

Now all we need is 24/7 Nuclear Plants to charge so we can charge @ night ( Thorium Reactors would be fine ) or the 50% efficient Solar Panel to charge the car @ home: http://www.gizmag.com/nrl-solar-cell-50-percent-conversion/25826/

The funny thing is, all these break-throughs as far as I know, got No Obama Green Jobs money, isn't that interesting...

How is it corporate welfare to not tax a business? I would prefer that there is no business tax. Tax the consumer who buys the product at the place of sale.

The corporate welfare I was referring to is the tax subsidies that Tesla and electric car manufactures receive for being inefficiently electric in the energy market (Teslas burn coal for fuel), and not taxing an enterprise as enticement to locate, is a tax subsidy as well, unless the tax exemption is extended to all business already located there. This qualifies by the definition of Fascism.

I agree with the theory of your tax policy, but there is no free market or Capitalism here, and you should have detected that.

I think the politicians are worried that this could be used as an example of how to do business across America. Cut corporate tax to 0% and watch us rise to the top.

If you are referring to this particular negotiation, the Pols have no such worries, it is very carefully crafted and assembled Socialism and Fascism disguised as opportunity.

Cut corporate tax to 0% and watch us rise to the top.

If you mean nationwide, for all, yeah the pols would be terrified and campaign "contributions" would fall like a stone in the stratosphere.
