S.D. SCHOOLS GET ARMORED VEHICLE FOR EMERGENCIES
San Diego Union-Tribune ^ | September 10, 2014 | Kristina Davis

City schools police have obtained their own military-grade Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle through a federal grant.

Known as an MRAP, the armored vehicle will be converted into a victim rescue vehicle that will be stocked with thousands of dollars in advanced medical supplies and be able to take heavy fire in case of an attack on campus, the San Diego Unified School District Police Department said Tuesday.

The MRAP, valued at more than $700,000, was acquired at no cost to the district. The vehicle is expected to be operational in October.

So what!! It was still 700K that the taxpayers had to fork over for a machine that has no business being on city streets or in the hands of a the school district for Chrissakes!

And don't worry...someone will think of a reason to use it

Apparently the people there want it. I haven’t heard of any angry crowds at school board meetings opposing it.

I wish our school district could get one.The school is out in the middle of nowhere, unprotected.Muslim murderers could kill hundreds of kids in minutes with no effective resistance.

Continuing to foster the government approach that it is easier to respond to a crisis rather than take simple steps to prevent one.

"It was still 700K..."

It was a lot more than that. $700k is the per item production cost. Taxpayers also payed for the RDTE, which was very high because this was a rapid fielding initiative executed on reduced schedule outside the bounds of the normal acquisition system. The taxpayers also paid to ship the vehicle to the school district, which is somewhere in the high tens ($50k +).

Goog lord what is wrong with this country? Are there no adults in government at all. Under no circumstances should a school ever posess an armored military vehicle, EVER.

Good luck getting your kids back, San Diego. When the government calls for a lock-down they’ll have armed guards to keep them in their chain-link prison.

but no meat, fried foods, juice or chocolate milk in schools.

Once the razor-wire goes up, they will look and feel exactly like prisons!

I take that back - prisoners get meat, fried foods, juice and chocolate milk.

Muslim murderers could kill hundreds of kids in minutes with no effective resistance.

And an MRAP can change that how? Tactics in this situation from trained terrorists will be to secure the exits quickly in a synchronized fashion and then to kill as quickly as possible, within the expected LE response cycle. They may use a deception at another location to increase response time. Bottom line, the best defense is to get out of the building and run; there are very few scenarios where the MRAP would add value, other than to protect law enforcement from marksmen/snipers, but you claim it will protect the children, so how?

I don't know about that, but we left the San Diego school district to get away from crappy schools that are controlled by a centralized, huge bureaucracy. Have a decent school in a nice neighborhood? Let's bus gangsters to that area so they can sell drugs and bring violence. Diversity is what's important! Never looked back.

Okay. For all those complaining about this a question.
What do you want done with a 700,000 vehicle, bought and paid for by tax dollars that the military has no use for. Park it somewhere and let it rot? Sell it? To whom?

The military can destroy it, as they do other surplus gear, but they damn sure don't need to be giving it to mall rent-a-cops in the form of school resource officers.

Your question has nothing to do with the basic question of whether it is appropriate to arm schools with MRAPs, and all about deflecting attention with an appeal to the wallet.

No sale. I'll stay on target and say giving the school an MRAP is inappropriate, I don't care how much money the government wasted on their toy.

Lets just say military vehicles in schools could somehow be justified which is impossible but I will play for now. First it was a ploy to sell the idea it came at no cost. What do you think maintenance on a vehicle like that will cost? You think they are going to drive it over to jiffy lube for an ok change? This vehicle will. Red to be kept in top running condition, you wanna pick up the tab for that? And what teacher is going to be qualified to drive an mrap when a gun shaped pop tart seems to scare the pants off them?
