With binoculars in hand, an assault rifle slung over his chest and a Glock pistol on his hip, a man named Will scans the banks of the Rio Grande looking for anyone trying to cross from Mexico into Texas.
Will is a member of the Patriots, a group of heavily armed private citizens who use displays of force to intimidate people attempting to cross the border illegally. Since early summer the Patriots have patrolled an area near Brownsville, Texas.
"If you spot them and shine your light on them, that lets them know that you're there," said the 25-year-old construction worker from Indiana who flew to Texas for a stint with the Patriots. Nine times out of 10, they're not going to come over.
"Even if they are going to try to cross again, we're still making it harder for them, and that's the reason we're here."

Americans. Doing what our own government won’t do; securing our borders.
For shame, Rick Perry.
These guys make me proud. At least there doing something.
I’m afraid you’re probably right.
These guys are not spoiling for a fight. They’ve just had enough with all the pontification from the politicians.
I am a native Texan...that border is NOT secure. No way, no how.
My brother once owned a ranch along the border. These illegals would trash the house, steal items and place folks lives in danger. Finally he just had enough and sold the place.
It’s certainly a mess.
If this were done right, they’d all be deputized on the spot, just like the posses of the Old West.
Bttt
Most of these guys hold FFL’s/CHL’s and in Texas it is within the law to carry a long gun in the open anyhow.
They are down there by invitation of the land owners. It is perfectly legal what they are doing.
I commend them all for their putting out their time, talent and treasure for us all.
Shining a light makes you a target. Learn to shoot in thr dark or get some night vision. Station your light on a fixed platform away from your position.
BUT, it also gives the Mexican soldiers or cartel thugs who may be hiding on the other bank an aiming point to pick you off, so don't leave one light on them too long.
If the government won’t fulfill its Constitutional duty to safeguard the nation, then it’s on the people to do it for them.
Maybe the best lights to use would be those blinding, high-intensity searchlight-strength ones the Soviets used when illuminating the forest as they closed in on Germany in WWII.
Ranchers are housing & feeding these Patriots to help secure their cattle, ranches, and workers.
If is plain disgusting that Obama, Napolitano, Holder & others have let this happen to multiple-generation ranchers in the states along the border.
I want the next President to have first-hand knowledge of the border problems.
Cruz—Perry—Arpaio—Brewer—NOT Jerry Brown!!!
Back in 2003 Ranch Rescue was the first to set up citizen patrols in south Texas.
They didn't shoot anyone but pistol whipped an illegal and the Texas Rangers went after them. They never could convict them but Casey Nethercott was a felon in possession so he was sent back to prison.
Then the illegals went after them on a civil complaint. The ranch owner settled out of court for a $100 grand, and Nethercott lost his 40 acres located on the AZ-Mex border in the judgement.
S-S-STFU
Well there is always shoot, shovel and shut up. :-)
