If my knowledge of Scottish history serves, they have wanted “secession” from England for quite a long time, particularly the Highlanders.

Scotland is not Ireland. Other than the Edwardian wars and Oliver Cromwell, Scotland has never been a colony of England. The current situation is a union of two equal kingdoms.

The Highlanders were not fighting for Scottish independence during the Jacobite rebellions. They were fighting to restore the House of Stuart (which had run out of Protestants) to the British throne after it was given to the Hanoverians. And the Protestant lowland Scots were every bit as anti-Jacobite and anti-Highlander as the English.

The Hanoverians WERE Stuarts.

George I was the grandson of Princess Elizabeth Stuart, the daughter of James VI/I, she married the Hanoverian king.

This I know....
But didn’t the famous Wallace, movie not withstanding, fight for independence? How about Robt the Bruce at the Battle of Bannockburn?
I know that was back at the end of the thirteenth, beginning of the fourteenth centuries...kind of a long time ago.
As far back as the Irish seeking independence?
And I know the low landers invariably continued to screw over the Highlanders throughout Scottish history...I get it.
