Stevens was extracted from the smoke-filled building by Libyan curiosity seekers, who transported him to the Benghazi Medical Center, where doctors worked on him for about 40 minutes, without success. According to the docs, his injuries were limited to smoke inhalation.
The BMC docs didn't know who he was until they contacted the US Embassy in Tripoli by calling numbers on his cell phone. The Embassy was afraid to send someone to retrieve the body. Eventually, some friends of a Libyan contact known as Babakar transported Stevens's body to the airport and turned it over to US officials.

“Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached,” Benedict quoted the emperor as saying to his Islamic interlocutor.
In Islamic teaching, Benedict said, “God is absolutely transcendent. His will is not bound up with any of our categories, even that of rationality.”
