The Luby's Cafeteria Massacre: A Brutal Reminder to Restaurants Telling Customers "No Guns"
Townhall.com ^ | September 9, 2014 | Katie Pavlich

Posted on 09/09/2014 3:58:58 PM PDT by Kaslin

Yesterday Panera Bread became another restaurant establishment asking customers to leave their guns at home, joining eateries like Chilis, Starbucks and stores like Target after pressure from anti-gun groups. Like other restaurant chains, Panera's official policy hasn't changed to an outright ban, but they've made clear customers carrying firearms for self-defense aren't welcome.

This "please leave your guns at home" policy is catching on, but as more restaurants join Panera and others like it, it's important to remind them of the horrifying Luby's Cafeteria massacre.

In 1991 Texas residents were banned by law from bringing firearms into restaurants. That same year, a mad man with an intent to kill as many people as possible, crashed his truck into a Lubys Cafeteria in Killeen. The man got out of his vehicle and shot 50 people, killing 23 of them. One of the survivors, Dr. Susan Gratia-Hupp, had left her gun in the parking lot and watched as her parents were executed in front of her. She was following the rules and obeying the law by leaving her gun in the car, right where the killer knew it would be. As Hupp describes in her own words, it was like shooting fish in a barrel. Everyone was defenseless.

As a survivor of the Luby's massacre, Hupp testified across the country in support of concealed-handgun laws. She said that if there had been a second chance to prevent the slaughter, she would have violated the Texas law and carried the handgun inside her purse into the restaurant. She testified across the country in support of concealed handgun laws, and was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 1996. The law was signed by then-Governor George W. Bush.

Restaurants should think twice and review history before banning or suggesting customers refrain from carrying firearms into their establishments. Customers and their families should also consider the safety risks that come with eating at establishments seen as soft targets by criminals.

The no guns thing will make the Michael Brown style “smash and grab” more inviting to these thugs especially in more upscale areas, knowing full well that nobody will be armed to stop them.

The walk in, smash and grab, force the customers to give up their valuables and split before the cops show up.

A target rich environment.

Exactly.

A sign “No Guns Allowed” on a restaurant door means totally nothing unless it is an official police notice.

They won’t get my business anyway whether I’m packing or not.

It is not that WE forget — it is that the anti-gun crowd still want the American public to be unarmed and vulnerable so that, the next time there is a mass murder, they can all crow: “See, we told you so.”

In the last decade or more there have been a number of states that have passed concealed carry laws. All the opponents predicted mass Dodge city-style shootouts with gigantic death totals including many innocents. Those shootouts never happened.

Of course, the anti-gun libs thought/think the mere possession of a firearm turns a normally mild-mannered person into a crazed killer.

Isn't there a class action lawsuit against that Aurora theater for NOT providing "security" for the patrons?

How would that work? It was a GUN FREE ZONE.

Should they have provided some unarmed rent-a-cop to come in and give James Holmes a severe frowning?

"Son, this is a GUN FREE ZONE! Stop shooting people. It's against our POLICY."

(In Droopy Dog voice:) "Yes, sir. I'll sit down now. Sorry."

I’d not go into a business that banned guns - OTOH, I’d not mention I have one, concealed that is.

Have had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Gratia-Hupp and hearing her speak a couple of times...

Declarations like Panera’s mean absolutely nothing to the legally armed...As private enterprises, I believe they have every right to determine their own policies including who they do and do not serve...And if their business falls off as a result, too bad, so sad...

If Victims By Choice wish to congregate in herds (the unintended consequence for them is they lose the umbrella of safety gun owners’ presence would otherwise provide) that is also their choice...And I respect their right to make it...

I choose to go about my business carrying concealed always and everywhere it is legal to do so...And the places where state and local laws declare it is not, I avoid unless impossible (jury duty, for instance)...Otherwise, covert carry means nobody would know anyway...

Places that advertise they are “Gun Free” or “Please Leave Guns...Elsewhere” simply do not get my business dollar...The list is growing...Mostly corporate chains...Pass ‘em by...No problem; there are usually ample choices among the Mom n Pop local establishments where my legally concealed arms are welcome...

Food’s much better anyway...And you’re much more likely to be dining with also-armed citizens...

I won’t patronize a restaurant that prevents me from defending myself out of political correctness.

There are evil people in this world who won’t obey the laws of God and Man. I have no intention of being a sitting duck for them.

Panera and others can go kiss my tuchis while they’re at it.

That’s kind of the point. It is not financially possible to provide adequate security (two security guards per patron), so if people want to deprive others of their right to defend themselves, they either need to provide perfect security or face bankruptcy and ruin. Or they could, you know, change their minds and allow people to choose for themselves.

These places need to be held liable for any injury caused by their anti-civil rights actions.

These are the same people that put up “no coloreds”

I have purchased two welding machines from one of my local welding chain stores. I probably have spent over $5K there. I know the guy behind the counter as a friend. After the Colorado theater shooting corporate posted the business forbidding CHL in the store.

The probability of getting into a situation in their 800 sg/ft sales floor in my little town is about as close to zero as you could get.

I look at the big sign in the window as I drive by to see if it is still there on my way to another store.

No quarter.

I’m going to tell Panera Bread that they lost a customer. I carry my gun into restaurant and I will continue to do so.

I WILL leave my gun at home the next time I go to Panera...which will be never. I’d rather leave my money at home than give it to these @ssholes.

OK, but the shooter violated all kinds of rules.

Let that be on his conscience.
