President Barack Obama announced Sunday that he will be sending members of the U.S. military to West Africa to help in the deadliest Ebola outbreak in history, which has claimed over 2,100 lives.
"We're going to have to get U.S. military assets just to set up, for example, isolation units and equipment there to provide security for public health workers surging from around the world," Obama said Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press."
The president insisted that the situation in West Africa remains a serious national security concern. International medical organizations such as Doctors Without Borders have reportedly petitioned to the White House and explained the urgency of the outbreak.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also sounded the alarm last week and noted that the virus, which has mainly affected Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, and has also spread to Nigeria, is "spiraling out of control."
CDC director Dr. Tom Frieden said in an interview that a number of countries have "turned their backs" on those coming from the countries that have been hit hardest by the outbreak. He added that the restrictions on flights and border crossings that have been established are also hindering relief efforts.
"This is making it really hard to get help in and to respond effectively to the outbreak," Frieden told CNN.
"What we're seeing is a ... hugely fast increase in cases that's harder and harder to manage. The more we can get in there and tamp that down, the fewer cases we'll have in the weeks and months to come."
While Obama said that it is unlikely that the virus will spread to the U.S. in the short term, he warned that the disease could threaten the U.S. in the future.

This would be a totally reasonable excuse to become a conscientious objector. Certainly the liberal aging hippies running this country would understand.
More military members have died under 0bama than what, since the Korean War?
The Medical Services are going to really like this. How does this serve the US’ best interests? Are the Muslim countries going to do the same, especially those that are filthy rich?
All that’s going to happen is that they will all catch Ebola.
80% of our combat fatalities in Afghanistan have been under Obama. Even though we’ve been there under Obama just as long as when Bush was president.
The VA can't even take care of our veterans and Obama is sending the military to Africa to help with Ebola? If they were qualified to provide help with medical emergencies, it should be to give Veterans the care they've earned and been deprived of.

NO NO NO....let him send John Kerry. Why put good, loyal and valuable US soldiers at risk!!!!! If I were a military man today, I would seriously consider resignation (or revolt!). Our guys don’t get paid enough to be sent in to certain death. Send in expendables ... We need troops for ISIS.

Not much risk with proper precautions. Most of the infections are because someone screwed up.
We're talking about the Obama administration here. Screw ups are the norm and Obama has no concern for the well being of our troops.
I have close relatives in the military. They have zero medical training and would be at great risk.
The disease is really only spread due to ignorance. There are a few accidents, but most of the victims were not properly isolated. The main spread was from boneheaded funeral rituals and untrained care giving. The purpose of this deployment is to transfer a little education to the native medical staff there.
That said, there is a nonzero risk to the soldiers (medics and guards). If the mission fails (or more likely is ineffective) it should be hung around Obama's neck along with his many other foreign policy screwups.
Then they obviously should not be sent. They are setting up a field hospital so most of the soldiers should be medics if this were run rationally. There are risks in any deployment, I'm not sure there are more in this one.
Democrats love nothing better than transforming the military into a gigantic social welfare organization.
They’ve managed to do that very well in the past year or two. I can’t wait to see what the USMC cross-dresser dress uniform looks like.
