His family was much poorer than most “inner city” folks today and did not receive hand-outs. Rural poor are, in may ways, even more destitute than city poor. Before that, my father’s family, including my uncle, sometimes only had a potato to eat, and I don’t mean they each had a potato. Their “school lunch” when they were able to attend, that is, was a slice of corn bread with a thin layer of lard on top. No, I’m not kidding.

Yes, you have hit upon another problem, the problem of hand-outs. Most inner city folks now get various forms of "assistance", which is a powerful incentive to do nothing.

Libs love to talk about how racist conservatives are. But it was LBJ who destroyed the black middle class.
