KINGSTON, Jamaica - A search-and-rescue operation resumed at first light Saturday off Jamaica's northeast coast as crews hope to solve the mystery of a small private plane carrying a prominent upstate New York couple who were taken on a ghostly 1,700-mile journey after the pilot was apparently incapacitated at the controls.

I heard in the audio that there was traffic below them, hence the delay from ATC to go to a lower altitude. In hindsight I would have gone lower first then dealt with the ramifications.

I think one of the pilots reported the guy’s chest was rising and falling - that’s incredible eyesight. Wow.

Maybe. But there's some pretty incredible optoelectronics available these days too.

I'll admit I'm no aircraft expert but isn't an emergency descent to below 10,000ft? by the plane in trouble about the only thing that can rectify this problem?

Can it still be refered to as a Lawn Dart flight even if the plane crashed in the water?

Aviate. Navigate. Communicate. In that order. Oldest rule in aviation. Maybe they were hypoxia, which can be insidious. RIP.

Not standard equipment on F-16s or F-15s unless the pilots used hand held devices.

I vote for the comment about the mk 1 eyeball.

Fair enough.

No mystery. They asked to descend. Air Traffic control responded by ordering them to go higher.

To fly above the storm cells? I should have saved a snap of the MCS yesterday.. no doubt a lot of traffic had to be re-re-reouted around/above them

A month ago, an idiot didn’t bother checking lanes before abruptly swinging his car into my lane and I was forced onto the shoulder.

Fortunately I cat like reflexes.

Now, driving in the left shoulder is dangerous and against the law but, there wasn’t a choiceand saving myself is always the prime directive to my existence.

Resolve a problem and beg forgiveness later.

It may one day save your life and in this instance they should have dropped altitude and asked for guidance on the way down.

[FAR Part § 91.211: Supplemental oxygen -- (a) General. No person may operate a civil aircraft of U.S. registry --

(1) At cabin pressure altitudes above 12,500 feet (MSL) up to and including 14,000 feet (MSL) unless the required minimum flight crew is provided with and uses supplemental oxygen for that part of the flight at those altitudes that is of more than 30 minutes duration;

(2) At cabin pressure altitudes above 14,000 feet (MSL) unless the required minimum flight crew is provided with and uses supplemental oxygen during the entire flight time at those altitudes; and

(3) At cabin pressure altitudes above 15,000 feet (MSL) unless each occupant of the aircraft is provided with supplemental oxygen.

(b) Pressurized cabin aircraft. (1) No person may operate a civil aircraft of U.S. registry with a pressurized cabin --

(i) At flight altitudes above flight level 250 unless at least a 10-minute supply of supplemental oxygen, in addition to any oxygen required to satisfy paragraph (a) of this section, is available for each occupant of the aircraft for use in the event that a descent is necessitated by loss of cabin pressurization; and

Generalized hypoxia occurs in healthy people when they ascend to high altitude, where it causes altitude sickness leading to potentially fatal complications: high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) and high altitude cerebral edema (HACE).[3] Hypoxia also occurs in healthy individuals when breathing mixtures of gasses with a low oxygen content, e.g. while diving underwater especially when using closed-circuit rebreather systems that control the amount of oxygen in the supplied air. A mild and non-damaging intermittent hypoxia is used intentionally during altitude trainings to develop an athletic performance adaptation at both the systemic and cellular level.[4]

The pilot and his wife were BOTH pilots and the only people on the plane.
