Pursuing ISIS to the Gates of Hell
The Atlantic ^ | SEP 4 2014 | Peter Beinart

The beheading of two journalists has transformed public debate over U.S. foreign policy.

Over the past two weeks, the American foreign-policy debate has dramatically changed. The key to understanding why lies in a book.

The book is called Special Providence. Published 13 years ago by Walter Russell Mead, it remains, for my money, the best analysis of American foreign policy written in our time. Mead argues that America has four foreign-policy traditions. He calls the first “Wilsonianism.” It represents America’s missionary desire to spread civilization across the globe. Once upon a time, spreading “civilization” meant spreading Christianity. Now it means spreading democracy and human rights. Samantha Power is a Wilsonian.

The second tradition is “Hamiltonianism.” It refers to the belief that America, as a trading nation separated from our largest markets by vast oceans, must make the world safe for American commerce. For our domestic prosperity, we must maintain an economically open, politically stable world order. George H.W. Bush is a Hamiltonian.

The third is “Jeffersonianism.” It reflects a deep-seated fear that if America entangles itself in imperial ventures abroad, we will destroy liberty at home. Glenn Greenwald and Ron Paul are Jeffersonians.

They must think two beheadings of their own each month is not manageable? Have they quit worshiping the POTUS?

Much like the bleeding heart media that protects the Innocent black teen thug who may someday rape rob or murder one of thier family members, oh how the landscape changes then. They have no abilty to think out of the box they're so imprisoned by thier agenda and ideology to the point where it actually threatens thier lives and others. Stupidity reigns

Once upon a time, spreading “civilization” meant spreading Christianity. Now it means spreading democracy and human rights homosexuality and collectivism.

It's not just you. Journalist math:

2 dead journalists + 1 dead gay + 1 dead black thug > 10,000 dead Christians

The quote I saw stated, “We will follow.”

If that is the case, chase and follow have two very different connotations.

Jefferson sent our navy to remove the sultan of Tripoli for attacking American ships and enslaving citizens, without asking for a Declaration of War.

Hey, Bite-me, are you going to pursue them as single-mindedly as you have pursued the murderers of the Benghazi 4???

“Is it just me, or do some journalists go from bleeding hearts to hanging judges when another journalist is killed?”

Almost all journalism majors are drama queens who want to get into media so they can “make a difference”. A true journalist would remain objective, but that commitment to non-biased reporting is gone with the wind. So when one of their own gets killed, out comes the victimhood card with a side order of outrage because one of their soldiers was sacrificed to the cause.

Personally I think any civilian who puts themselves in harm’s way as they do, has an unhealthy obsession with whatever it is they’re covering. A lot of them seem to be freelancers out there panning for gold, convinced they’re just one story or photo away from a Pulitzer Prize. They’re no different than papparazzi stalking a celebrity hoping for that one picture that will make them rich.

I noticed that too. “Follow” has a very weak connotation.

Key point not in excerpt: The fourth tradition according to Mead is Jacksonianism.

What’s causing this Jacksonian eruption is the sight of two terrified Americans, on their knees, about to be beheaded by masked fanatics. Few images could more powerfully stoke Jacksonian rage... For Jacksonians, you don’t “degrade” a group that beheads Americans. You annihilate it.

I don't know if he was trying to be sly or just didn't realize what he was saying.

It's hard to tell with Biden.

Stop by around Thanksgiving.

You'll find that Hell has frozen over.

(We often get between a foot and 18 inches of snow a few days before Thanksgiving.)

Cheers!
