Dramatic Surge in Ebola Deaths

Dakar - More than 1 900 people have died in the Ebola epidemic sweeping through West Africa, the head of the World Health Organisation said on Wednesday.

"As of this week, we are reporting 3 500 cases confirmed in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia and more than 1 900 deaths - and the outbreak is rising," Margaret Chan told reporters in Washington.

The latest toll represents a significant increase from the 1 552 deaths and 3 069 cases reported by the Geneva-based organisation just days ago.

Speaking at a news conference, Chan said she hoped that, thanks to the global response to the crisis, transmission of the often fatal virus could be stopped in six to nine months.

"With this international response, co-ordinated response, the money is coming, the technical experts are coming, so we hope to stop the transmission in six to nine months," Chan said.

Citing the WHO's roadmap to fight the worst Ebola outbreak in history, she said that in countries with "very intense transmission" - Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia - "we would like to reverse the trend in three months".

She said for countries with "localised transmission" such as the Democratic Republic of Congo and Senegal, the WHO "would like to stop all transmission within eight weeks".

Meanwhile, AP reported from Dakar on Wednesday that at least $600m was needed to fight the Ebola outbreak.

The top priority is providing protective gear to health workers in the affected areas and ensuring that they receive hazard pay, said David Nabarro, who is co-ordinating the UN response to the unprecedented outbreak.

Echoing the WHO, American officials on Wednesday warned that Ebola is likely to spread to still more countries.

"This is not an African disease. This is a virus that is a threat to all humanity," Gayle Smith, special assistant to President Barack Obama and senior director at the National Security Council told reporters during a telephone briefing.

The key to solving the outbreak will be implementing measures used in all previous outbreaks: isolating and treating the sick, monitoring their contacts for signs of disease and safely burying the dead, said Tom Kenyon, of the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

"There is a window of opportunity, but it's closing with each and every day that we delay in getting measures in place," he said.

Ebola is a disease of peace. Anyone who says different is a hateful ebolaphobe. There, all fixed.

Okay. But if it’s known that a deadly disease is going on, you shouldn’t kidnap the body from the hospital/clinic. At least the hospital/clinic and funeral homes would take precautions. These family members practicing these customs are a big reason the disease is spreading.

The latest American doctor diagnosed with ebola - “Sacra was following all protocols and taking all necessary precautions against Ebola, Johnson said. It is unclear how he became infected, but SIM is working with the CDC to determine the point of contact.

When asked if the organization was going to bring Sacra back to the United States for treatment, Johnson said all options were being explored.”

The surge results from interest and measurement.

Before the head linse began to control the disease we don’t know how many died.

We don’t know if the surge is in deaths or in reported deaths

Notice that they are now using rounded out numbers to the nearest hundred? This means they can NO LONGER get even mildly accurate stats. WHO earlier stated that the cases and deaths could be undereported by a factor of 4 which means total deaths are closer to 8000 and cases around 14,000. In reality the 20,000 cases we’ve been hearing about as some sort of a maximum before ebola magically sputters out will be reached within a week.

Yes, millions of people in Africa have died because of the EPA’s banning of DDT, the Left’s hysterical response to Rachel Carson’s book, “The Silent Spring.” Richard Nixon bears responsibility for creating this agency, a curse on a free country.

The SIM woman Writebol (sp?) Who got the ZMAPP has stated that she felt she was coming down with malaria, being familiar because she had previously had malaria. So her treatment was delayed because of her self mis-diagnosis. Now ebola presents with flu or malaria type symptoms, it’s in all the textbooks and flers, posters, and radio spots. The africans would assume malaria before ebola. Question is why did she assume that while treating ebola vistims?

about a million people die each year from malaria.....

And it is brought into this country left and right but we have ways to treat it without overwhelming our healthcare system. You are talking globally with next to no treatment. Wait'll the big E takes hold in a very populated city and they become overwhelmed.

I read on slashdot (website) today that some "professionals" were trying to trace the genome back to where this new strain had started; they traced it back to 2004. Before the paper was published, five are now dead of Ebola even though they were taking precautions.

So when does a real quarantine go into effect? No travel in and no travel out of infected areas without at least a 30 day wait period to make sure the people going in and out are free of the disease?

The 'alarm' is to shake the US money tree... heighten the drama... The CDC are 'citizens of the world' - they'll make NO effort to protect the people who pay their salaries and support their empire. If they cared about American citizens they would ask the airlines to stop flights in and out of the ebola zone. They don't care about us... they'll do nothing until the disease is here.

It came from Africa.

They kept on telling me I was hysterical about the possibility of catching it.

They told me I was ignorant for not knowing how it was spread.

They clamored for a cure.

That was AIDS, this is ebola.

To date, both CDC and WHO remain opposed to quarantine measures.

I hate to sound jaded or tinfoil, but cui bono?

Why even chance this getting completely out of hand on a global basis? It is bad enough where it is, but the more contained it is, the less difficult it will be to stop it.

Essentially, the only ones that could possibly benefit are those who would benefit from a planet howling for anyone, someone, to do anything to make. it. stop.

Money no object? There would be enormous profits to be made from desperate people.

Crisis? leadership vacuum? Global leadership vacuum?

Someone, something will fill that vacuum, perhaps even on a global level, not so much against the wishes of the people of the world, but at their behest (at least in the media).

The implications for anyone opposed to world government are immediately obvious.
