.....On September 19, 2001, a story ran in the Hyde Park Herald containing then-State-Senator Barack Obama’s response to the 9/11 tragedy. In this piece (quoted in this article from the New Yorker, under the heading “The Speech”), Obama expresses empathy for the murderers! Not anger, not disdain, not a word of sympathy for the victims. His concern was for the murderers.....
Quoting Obama in the Hyde Park Herald:
"We must also engage, however, in the more difficult task of understanding the sources of such madness. The essence of this tragedy, it seems to me, derives from a fundamental absence of empathy on the part of the attackers: an inability to imagine, or connect with, the humanity and suffering of others. Such a failure of empathy, such numbness to the pain of a child or the desperation of a parent, is not innate; nor, history tells us, is it unique to a particular culture, religion, or ethnicity. It may find expression in a particular brand of violence, and may be channeled by particular demagogues or fanatics. Most often, though, it grows out of a climate of poverty and ignorance, helplessness and despair."

Because deep down, Obama is saying (without coming out and accusing us directly) that the U.S. and other western powers are responsible for the rage of the poor, benighted, suffering persons who kill only because of the terrible things we’ve done to them.
The old leftist trope is that all the poor people of the world are only poor because the rich countries of the world (that's us) made them that way. The old zero-sum, "we're rich because they're poor" garbage. Like in the U.S., according to the leftists the poor are never responsible for their own problems...it's always somebody else making them stupid, violent, and lazy.

So, Barack, is this how you would respond if you’re out with your family, in Chicago and you’re getting mugged?
You would try to “understand the source of the madness” so you could empathize with your attackers?
Your inability to fight back may lead you to cower in fear on the streets of Chicago, but that should not be the basis for America’s defense policy.
