Redwood City wants to do something new to electric car drivers: Charge them for charging up their batteries.

Since 2011, the city has provided some charging stations at no cost as part of its effort to fight global warming.

The 10 charging stations, worth about $70,000 in all, were given to the city at no cost by ChargePoint Inc. of Campbell, which received a $37 million federal Department of Energy grant to install such stations at public facilities across the country

We upper class rich folks want to thank all you little people for the $10,000 subsidy to buy our Teslas and for the free electricity to recharge our batteries. All in the name of global warming you know.

Maybe someone should tell the dumb asses in Redwood City that “global warming” ended in 1998.

I guess it must be free to somebody but the other somebody is payin’ for it. I noticed a couple of places around town that have “charging” stations. I didn’t really look that close to see if there’s a place to put your credit card or not. Just think how great you would feel if you were “doing something” about the fate of the world by driving a tesla or prius or whatever. I think I need to run to mickey D’s and get some sausage biscuts with the old hemi.

And also point out that electric cars just move the carbon emissions, it doesn’t curtail them.

There’s a free Tesla charging station near my house. I told a Tesla owner I was going to get a trailer and load it up with batteries. Charge it for free and run my house on it. He got all huffy.

Not only do you get “free” electricity but also free parking. I was thinking of running a dummy cord to the front of my 4 x 4 GMC park in one of these spaces and plug it in.

So the city incurs no capital expense to buy or install these electric chargers?

And I'll bet that the contract calls for ChargePoint to pay for maintenance for xx years.

And now the city wants tax paying citizens (or not) to pay for the “I can charge my electric car for a dollar” electricity?

I always get a confused look from people when I point out to them that the electricity they are using is most likely generated by burning coal. Especially when they give me “the look” when I use paper towels instead of the electric hand drier in a restroom.

If they give out free electric to they should also give out free gasoline, bus tickets, train rides, etc.

LOL! Now that’s funny. I told my wife the other day as we passed by one of the charging stations that I ought to bring one of my orange extension cords and just run it under the hood of my electric powered Hemi Ram 4x4 truck and back right in. After all, all vehicles use electricity to run don’t they?

I am with you on that one! When I see an electric car driver, I always get all cheery and excited and then tell them, “That is a great coal burner you got there.” It is fun watching them get lost in total confusion....

Does anyone know how much the electricity costs to completely charge up an electric car?

Depends on a few things including the car, how empty your battery is and the cost of electricity.

The Chevy Volt gets 2.7 miles per kilowatt hour. Let's assume you drive 1000 miles per month; you would need to pay for 370 kilowatt hours of electricity. If you pay 12 cents per kilowatt hour (your rate may be higher or lower) that brings your total electric bill to $44.44 for the month.

I have to pay for every KWH I use in electricity at my property.

WHY should anyone get to charge their cars for free”?

Are not the local taxpayers paying for this ‘free charging” ??????

I would put up a recall for every single city official who voted for this kind of nonsense.

BTW—The towing companies are having a surge in business with all the electric cars that are dying on the long open Nevada highways.
