Researchers say that’s because of shrinking ice in the seas off Russia.
Arctic ice is at record high. Wouldn’t ice in the seas off Russia be the Arctic? This must be some new phenomena where shrinking ice causes it to get bigger.
Perhaps that polar vortex is moving the ice cap from the Russian to the Canadian side of the Arctic Ocean.
It is Antarctic ice that is at a record high. Arctic ice has rebounded over the past 2 years to a point where it has restored more than half the multi year ice that was supposed to be gone forever!
I check this site every morning.

Along with Spaceweather.com and the local CoCoRaHS site.
Most folks confuse lots of data when talking about Arctic ice. In the yearly pattern it grows through the winter months and shrinks through the summer months.
If you click on the graph you’ll see there is a lot more sea ice this time of year than there was in 2012 - but still a bit below the average they decided to use.
The Antarctic is coming out of winter but is at record levels.
