Having solved all other problems, Obama to fix your dishwasher

I guess he really was multitasking out on the golf course. The President’s team has been hard at work behind the scenes, coming up with a strategy … well, maybe we should say plan, to address the nation’s many challenges.

Spurred by President Obama’s climate action plan, the Department of Energy is pumping out new standards for refrigerators, dishwashers, air conditioners, ceiling fans, furnaces, boilers, water heaters, lamps and many more appliances.

The administration says the standards will not only help the planet but also stimulate the economy by saving consumers money on their energy bills that they can spend elsewhere.

After what we’ve been through with energy regulations, you’d think the administration would be at least a little hesitant to leap in for another grab at that brass ring. I mean, won’t a sudden raft of new requirements for the products everyone has to purchase have some, er… unintended consequences? William Teach seems to have been thinking along the same lines.

I just got this 1963 Speed Queen Model 90 washer off CL.

40 bucks. I figured if it didn't work... which I was told it did work... I could undoubtedly fix it myself. Just finished the first 4 loads of laundry. One load of hot water washed it all and, by golly, everything is actually clean and doesn't smell, unlike the HE frontloaders Øbozo will mandate... that cost $1300 are made by Chinese children and fail after 2 years of service.

"In my area, not only did they raise the rates, but they are charging us for the rain."

Same with me. We must be in the state.
I expect the Democrat Party eco-tyrants to start charging the people for sunlight, shade from clouds and for the air we breathe, any day now. How long before a tax on everybody for being alive is imposed, ostensibly to "save the earth", because every person's body heat might increase global warming?

As you wrote, high efficiency is high tech and high cost. That doesn’t mean it isn’t worth pursuing, but in engineering, there’s always a balancing act. Increased performance typically comes at the expense of some other area, like durability or cost. One rarely (never?) has all the money one needs.

What’s that saying? Pick any of the following two features you want: inexpensive, high quality, and fast delivery. You can never have the third.

All of these government mandates come at a very real cost, and we citizens are apparently not considered smart enough to make these hard choices on our own. That’s really one of my biggest gripes with the left. The so-called tolerance crowd has zero tolerance for any views different than their own, and they like to use the full weight of government to have their way.

Myself? I’m pretty much a live and let live kind of guy (as are most conservatives I know). The true test of a free society is tolerance for views other than one’s own.

yldstrk: “there is no P in the tsp these days”

The real stuff is still available, but you have to look closely at the labels. Some products marked “TSP” are masquerading as trisodium phosphate. They may contain some TSP, but the concentration isn’t what it once was.

Yes, new regulations will save money. Ask any small business owner who wanted to put a dishwasher in their break room like one I worked for did recently.

The standard model: $300, the ADA compliant model: $700. The difference: the controls were moved to the top of the door to supposedly make it easier for someone with limited motor skills to operate.
