COLORADO – Two F-16 fighter jets under the direction of North American Aerospace Defense Command assisted the FAA today with an unresponsive general aviation aircraft.
The aircraft took off from Waukesha Airport in Wisconsin and was on its way to Manassas Airport in Virginia when it crashed into the Atlantic ocean, approximately 140 NM SW of Washington, DC.

Radio news said the plane violated restricted airspace in DC.
Most likely a wacco pilot; or else a (medically) disabled one.
But perhaps noteworthy, given heightened concern over
attacks.
He was unconscious per the USAF pilots sent out to intercept.
Likely a heart attack or stroke.
Yes, either he/she had no navigation skills, or medically disabled.
If that was unintentional those seem like some long odds.
Of course they don't say which restricted airspace was violated.
140 NM SW of DC is not ocean. Or is there some big news I have yet to hear?
Perhaps the F-16s escorted it out and then shot it down. Whole story sounds fishy and I don’t believe much news coming out of government agencies these days.
That would put it in north-central North Carolina

The Atlantic Ocean is about 125 air miles past Manassas to the east so the plane passed by the stated destination.
Qualifies as a “near miss” at only 125 miles.
