SHOULD HAVE BEEN A HIT – Barry McGuire: “Cloudy Summer Afternoon”

Today, Barry McGuire is a success in Christian rock, but in the mid-Sixties he was best known for his recording of P. F. Sloan’s protest song, “Eve of Destruction”. (I did Phil Sloan’s songbook a few years ago.) This is an example of just what Lou Adler could do as a producer. The Dixieland jazz playing is top notch, and the instrumental middle section of this recording is superlative. This should have been a hit.

#9 – Petula Clark: “I Couldn’t Live Without Your Love”

Tony Hatch and Jackie Trent were the equals of Hal David and Burt Bacharach, although the Hatch-Trent partnership lasted fewer years. Just as Hal and Burt used Dionne Warwick as the chief vehicle for their songs, Tony and Jackie used Petula Clark. This is one of their best, with a great, catchy D Major opening that perfectly sets up what is to come.

The video is a nostalgic look at Los Angeles and other cities. The photo of the two-car trolley is a rare color shot of two 1907 Jewett center-entrance cars running on one of the Red Arrow lines out of Upper Darby, PA. By World War II, Brill Master Units, Brilliners and St. Louis PCC cars would replace the Jewetts.

Frankie Laine-Moonlight Gambler-1956
is in my list of top 989 songs,
-

-
You can gamble for match sticks,
you can gamble for gold,
The stakes may be heavy or small,
But if you haven’t gambled for love and lost,
Then you haven’t gambled at all.

They call me a moonlight gambler,
I’ve gambled for love and lost,
When I gamble for love and it isn’t in the cards,
Oh, what heartaches it can cost me.

Win or lose, I’m a moonlight gambler,
And a winner is what I long to be,
So I’ll gamble for love just as long as I live,
Till the day Lady Luck smiles at me.

You can gamble for match sticks,
you can gamble for gold,
The stakes may be heavy or small,
But if you haven’t gambled for love and lost,
Then you haven’t gambled at all.

No, if you haven’t gambled for love in the moonlight,
Then you haven’t gambled at all,
So I’ll gamble for love just as long as I live,
Till the day Lady Luck smiles at me.

#69 – Jimmy Ruffin: “What Becomes of the Brokenhearted”

It was Jimmy’s curse that he was always overshadowed by his younger brother David, who went on to sing with the Temptations. Jimmy had this one hit with Motown and spent the rest of his career in the UK scoring a few hits on their charts.

The three-chord opening is a good example of tonal misdirection. You don’t expect it to land in the key of B-flat Major.

#8 – The Beatles: “Yellow Submarine”

Ringo had a puckish side to his song writing. This video is from the cartoon, which is like Disney on acid.

“Disney on acid”!! LOL!

I always wondered if the song didn’t have a drug-related connotation. :)
