Should we Work with Assad to Defeat the ISIS?
American Thinker ^ | 08/28/2014 | By Paul Austin Murphy

The British government has said that it won't work with President Bashar al-Assad in order to destroy the Islamic State (IS) in Syria and Iraq.

This is in response to the comments of the former head of the British Army, Lord Dannatt (along with former Foreign Secretary Sir Malcolm Rifkind), who recently advised some kind of alliance with Assad. And, as a military man, I suppose that Lord Dannatt may know what he's talking about.

Nonetheless, since these suggestions seem to have arisen specifically in response to the beheading of the U.S. journalist James Foley, they may simply be knee-jerk reactions. After all, if it's worth working with Assad now, surely it was worth working with him last week or even months ago. After all, IS have been carrying out large-scale killings and wreaking havoc in Syria and Iraq for up to four months now.

Despite Lord Dannatt's words, the Foreign Secretary (during an interview on BBC Radio 4's World at One) has said that cooperating with the Syrian regime would “poison” Britain's endeavors in that part of the world. Philip Hammond said:

"We may very well find that we are fighting, on some occasions, the same people that he is but that doesn't make us his ally."

In other words, is our enemy’s enemy necessarily our friend? Well, no; not necessarily our friend. However, that doesn't stop us from working with an enemy in order to defeat a worse enemy. In any case, working with someone doesn't make that person our friend. Or, as Sir Rifkind put it, history has shown us that "sometimes you actually have to make an arrangement with some nasty people in order to get rid of some even nastier ones".

Obama released IS’ Caliph and his 5 Generals.

Why?

Why?

IT is the same reason Hasan is alive ... and heading
there to be in its government.

Foolish, we have a common enemy, one that is quite malignant; if Iran wanted to help kill these rabid dogs I’d accept their help! Plus there is reason to believe that it was the rebels in Syria that used the chemical weapons.

Assad is not dangerous to America or to his neighbors. ISIS is.

Let's see....Syria is an ally of Russia. But IIRC, we fought alongside of Russians in Afghanistan.

We've been giving weapons to the rebels who were killing the Christians. How much muddier can our association be??

Then there's the fact that Russia got Assad to give up his chem weapons. However, our Pres just recently took full credit.

Where did John Kerry go? Who is John Kerry. I thin he was in Vietnam.

RE: we fought alongside of Russians in Afghanistan.

Actually we aided the resistance to Russia in Afghanistan, not knowing (or ignoring the fact) that some of them would be TALIBAN (and of course Osama Bin Ladin).

Tell that to Israel.

The first and only real mission is to get them out Iraq and keep them out. After that, let the devil take the hindmost.

Assad, the Mullahs and Putin want to be our knights in shining armor now.

This whole situation is beginning to feel contrived.

Weird times.

Assad is allied with Iran and Hezbollah. I’m pretty sure the comment about him not bothering his neighbors is as accurate as all of these people who say Putin’s no threat to Russians and Russia’s neighbors.

Assad is not dangerous to Israel. Assad is an annoyance to Israel which Israel has well in hand. No rockets fly from Syria as they do from Lebanon. ISIS in Syria is a danger to Israel.

Working with Assad is the only choice, we don’t need to swap spit.

We had no trouble working with Stalin.

BTW, he killed a lot more of his people than Hitler even dreamed of. But Assad is a Target of the homo's Arab Spring campaign, which has brought torture and death to Christians in every country where he supported it.

Assad belongs to a minority in Syria, a minority that would also would be wiped out if the Muslim "Reformers and Rebels" get their way. More power to him. The only country that truly understands the threat of Islam at this moment in world history seems to be Russia. Tours? Lepanto? Vienna? Those names ring no bells in dumb, fat, EBT-America, which is why we are doomed to experience the horrors of Islam and the Caliphate.

Probably not a good time to have a Muslim golf-homo in the driver's seat.

Stalin and Mao stand alone on top of the dictator list no doubt. Probably 50+Millon combined on their dance card.

A rational strategic thinker would say yes.
Take the lesser of two evils, and deal with that one at
some future date.

For these Liberals though, who spent their entire academic careers sitting around the faculty lounge wringing their hands over the coup against Arbenz in Guatemala or Mosaddegh in Iran in the early 50’s....they just can’t bring themselves to do it.

NO!
We have the ability to destroy those asshats on our own of we allow our military to do it right.
There is NO ONE in the Middle East beyond Israel that is worth helping or that would not turn around and shoot us in the back. We can not be friends or allies with these people.

As much as Churchill distrusted Stalin he understood the need to work with him to defeat Hitler. Destroy the immediate threat.
Same thing.
