Rotherham child sex abuse could be tip of an iceberg, say campaigners

Rotherham has been labelled a town of shame in the wake of revelations that 1,400 children were sexually exploited over a 16-year-period, but experts and campaigners argue the same abuse is continuing to happen across the country, and is hidden in other boroughs that refuse to acknowledge the problem.

"When you look at the Rotherham report – nature of the abuse, the failures – you could write the same report about any number of different places," said Dr Helen Beckett, of the International Centre, which researches child sexual exploitation, violence and trafficking at the University of Bedfordshire. "What we see time and time again is that young people are not treated as victims, there is a real failure to see the vulnerability of these young people and instead write them off as out of control, problematic teenagers."

There is mounting evidence that the shocking revelations in the Rotherham report could provide a glimpse of the scale of childhood sexual abuse across the country, and not just in one town.

In an extensive report into the nature of child sexual exploitation, the Office of the Children's Commissioner identified 2,409 victims over a 14-month period and estimated that 16,500 children were at risk of a specific type of abuse that can see gangs of abusers grooming children as young as 11 in order to rape, sexually abuse and, in some cases, traffic them among other men and between cities.

Islam must be destroyed

It will, but not until Jesus comes back and its "god" gets thrown into the lake of fire. Meanwhile it should be treated like the ebola virus.

That's a misunderstanding of the meaning of the colloquial term 'Asian' in Britain. For many decades (long before PC) it's been the term commonly used to describe anybody originating from the countries of what used to be British India - so not just Muslims, but also Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and many others, the only common feature being that they derive from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh etc. This usage arose in colonial days when people deriving from that area were just about the only people from the continent of Asia to be commonly seen in Britain.

The usage has remained even now there are plenty from other parts of the Continent, for which other terms are used - for instance, Chinese are usually described just as 'Chinese', people from Thailand, Vietnam etc as 'South-East Asian' etc etc. It's particularly confusing for Americans, who use 'Asian' in a very different way.

It remained convenient in the 1950s and 1960s to describe Indian-continent originators as 'Asian' in order to distinguish them from the other largest group of post-world war II 'new Commonwealth' immigrants, who were Afro-Caribbeans from the islands of the former British West Indies - and the usage has stuck.

Incidentally, the fact that the perpetrators in this dreadful story are nearly all Muslim has been reported, without euphemism, throughout the British media.

And they’ll demand you leave space for that word on any UI you create - BTW, it’s the equivalent of “OK”... :)

“When I first read of this crime in an online UK newspaper, I thought it was odd. I realize that actual Asian immigrants do sometimes commit crimes; but it seemed out of character that a gang of Asians (I’m thinking; Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc) would commit this type of crime.”

For the last few years, if you read about Asian crime in Europe it is the Muslims.

Sorry to be pedantic, but I don’t understand why Americans class Pakistan as part of the ME. Its part of ‘SE Asia’, ‘the Indian sub-continent’, Asia......not the Middle East.

SE Asia in the UK is regarded as containing India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Its a nonsense to include Pakistan as part of the ME.

You may as well include Scotland as part of Eastern Europe.

Thanks to those who pointed out the different use of the term, "Asian" in the UK vs the meaning of the term in the US.

However - according to the lengthy, but excellent (as well as maddening) article, linked below; the UK media (and officials) did use the term "Asian" to give the impression that the perps could have covered the ethno-religious waterfront of Indian, Pakistani, Hindu, Sikh, Muslim and others. When, in fact, the perps were almost exclusively Muslim and the victims were exclusively non-Muslim.

They also knew that the exact same crimes were being committed in the Netherlands, by Muslims who were not "Asian", but were often Moroccan and Turkish.

Furthermore; these crimes have been going on for DECADES! With the knowledge of Police, Politicians, Teachers' Unions, Social Workers, Journalists, and others - with virtually no action taken. And literally covered up, in many cases.

When questioned as to why they were silent, those in charge, claimed that they were afraid of being called "Racist"!!!!!!!

Please take a few minutes to read at least some of the following. Send links to your friends. I know that a lot of people don't like to read much, but this is extremely important for people to learn about. It's probably taking place here in America, too.

Thanks for your time.
