Boycott Divest Sanction not stopping collaboration between Israeli and Canadian universities

CALGARY — The Boycott Divest Sanction movement that is gaining popularity across Canadian universities has done little to deter exchanges and co-operation between academics here and in Israel, according to the Israeli ambassador to Canada.

As protests against Israel have grown in the wake of ongoing conflict in Gaza, Rafael Barak, the Israeli ambassador to Canada, said he is pleased by the way local authorities have handled the sometimes violent escalation of hostilities between protest groups.

Meanwhile, BDS movements — passed by several student groups in recent years, including at three universities in Toronto — seem to be having little impact, he said.

“There is almost no Canadian or Israeli university that doesn’t have any co-operation at all,” Mr. Barak said after a speech delivered at the University of Calgary’s School of Public Policy on Wednesday. He is in the midst of a cross-country tour to encourage co-operation on trade and innovation between businesses and universities.

“In every place [I visit] I’m very well received,” he said.

Currently, he said, there is plan to invite more than a dozen vice presidents of research from Canadian universities to Israel in December.

“If the BDS movement has been effective [it’s because] we in Israel have been over-reacting,” he said. “It’s a phenomenon that exists, but if you analyze this phenomenon, how many people are there who are the usual suspects?”

The problem is in viewing universities as institutions interested in knowledge and truth. That has to stop, or Canadian universities will never be able to hold their heads up. If knowledge and truth means violating a political commitment, it must be abandoned./s

Yep, but I only learned about it later. I was dealing with a whole lot of baggage at the time (death of parents, contested will that got seriously ugly, new job, finding a place to live) so I wasn’t following the news all that closely. I’m no philatelist but I’d give just about anything for a first day cover of that stamp, just to rub my left-wing Euro-islamophile sister’s face in it. Hell, I’d buy a loose one just so I could use it to send her a Christian-themed birthday card.

No unresolved family issues here, no sir.
