Climate Change 'Pause' May Last Another Decade

The "pause" in global warming may last another decade before surface temperatures start rising again, according to scientists who say heat is being stored in the depths of the Atlantic and Southern Oceans.

Global average surface temperatures rose rapidly from the 1970s but have been relatively stable since the late 1990s, in a trend that has been seized upon by climate sceptics who question the science of man-made warming.

Climate change scientists have proposed more than a dozen theories to explain the "hiatus", which they say is a "distraction" from the widespread consensus on global warming.

A new study, published in the journal Science, suggests that a natural cycle of ocean currents has caused the phenomenon by drawing heat from shallow waters down almost a mile into the depths of the Atlantic and Southern Oceans.

The cycle naturally produces periods of roughly 30 years in which heat is stored near the surface of the Atlantic Ocean, leading to warmer temperatures, followed by roughly 30 years in which it is stored in the depths, causing cooler surface temperatures, it suggests.

Rising surface temperatures in the last three decades of the 20th century were roughly half caused by man-made global warming and half by the ocean currents keeping more heat near the surface, it finds.

Another pantload to keep the money flowing and the regulations flying.

Yeah, that’s the ticket!

Climate Change ‘Pause’ May Last Another 5000 years.

Quick, give all your freedom and money to the government before it’s too late! This is SOOOO urgent!
We MUST destroy civilization so that the rich oceanfront property owners don’t have the water raise .00000735 inches over the next 10,000 years.

Just because it does not exist does not mean it is not happening. I get it.

* Climate change scientists have proposed more than a dozen theories to explain the “hiatus” *

Only dozens of theories?!?!?

Why not millions of theories....or billions of theories?

Whatever happened to their “consensus”?

They forgot the first rule of grifters working as a team...stick to the same story when you're pulling a scam.

This “hiatus” of stability must be a sort of buzz-kill for the Climate-Enthusiasts. Like the Shi’ite Muslims waiting for the 12th Imam.

Meanwhile, the world continues to function perfectly well, no runaway heating, no ocean rises, and no noticeable trends of weather that could be called “catastrophic” or “cataclysmic”.

A new study, published in the journal Science, suggests that a natural cycle of ocean currents has caused the phenomenon by drawing heat from shallow waters down almost a mile into the depths of the Atlantic and Southern Oceans.

Warm water doesn't sink, cold water does.

Ocean currents are caused by density differences, which are caused by temperature (and salinity) differences.

Warm water is NOT being drawn down.

According to the article reality is a distraction from their consensus. How very sad for them. These people are nuttier than a snickers bar.

When real scientists postulate a theory, they propose events that would act as confirming evidence, and a lack of those events (or the opposite) is negative evidence. The warm-mongers simply ignore or find new theories to explain away negative evidence. Yet they claim skeptics are the ones “opposed to science”.

Those of us not on the “consensus” bandwagon still do.

Data are not a distraction. Data are the ground truth that theory must match. [Note: I am from the generation when the scientific method was supposed to be above politics, so my views will seem dated to younger readers.]

scientists . . . say heat is being stored in the depths of the Atlantic and Southern Oceans.

I hear they're storing quite a bit of heat at CNN and MSNBC, not to mention the NY Times.

I don’t subscribe to this AGW crap, but an interesting property of water is that as the temperature decreases, there is a point where its density increase stops, then reverses. If I remember correctly, that point is 39*F.

So technically there is a window close to the freezing point where the warmer water will sink.

But the AGW theory is still crap.
