Texas cops defend pulling over mother of four at gunpoint

Police in Texas have admitted they were wrong to draw their guns on a mother of four when they pulled over the family car early this month, but they won't apologize.

Kametra Barbour was told to exit her vehicle and she was handcuffed at gunpoint as her children watched from the backseat, dashcam footage shows.

The police only lowered their weapons after her six-year-old son got out of the car with his hands up, asking the officers, "Are we going to jail?"

A child is heard crying and screaming on the footage, as an officer tells her, "Stop crying. It's OK. It's OK. Everything's fine now."

ABC News reports the officers were responding after reports of four black men waving a gun out of a beige or tan-coloured Toyota. Barbour was driving a burgundy Nissan Maxima.

The police department defended the traffic stop as appropriate.

“I don’t agree with IN ALL CASES! For example, a bank robber coming out the front door of a bank.”

Obviously that is clearly a hostile individual, to the point where shooting first is justified. Someone exiting a bank with a gun in his hand is 99% likely to have ill intentions.
When the situation is in doubt, restraint is the order of the day. Even if in someone’s property, and you see a gun. That doesn’t mean criminal. But cops assume what is in their own best interests, and the hell with everyone else. They then wonder why people don’t care about their interests.

“There is only one answer and that is that these cops that kill people or wound them and are outside of THE LAW as determined by a jury and a judge and prosecutor and defense lawyer should go to jail. Each case is different. Thank god these Texas cops did not open fire.”

Letting the Dorner hunt cops off, I think, has encouraged this anything goes mentality. Had they been punished as they deserved, other cops would have gotten the message that self control is still required. You are a professional LE officer. Act like it, not like the mall cop.

......I was in the military 7 years but never in combat. So, your right on that point.

I don’t think I “proposed” anything.

Re “looser rules than our military”. The answer is NO. As I have stated in many previous posts, I think Obamas and Hillary’s ROE’s are one reason why this country should not have “boots on the ground” anymore. Our leaders are idiots and hire idiot lawyers, in some cases completely inexperienced in ANYTHING, to make, in effect, combat decisions. This results in our kids being sent overseas to combat where often they either get murdered or get prosecuted.

Regarding police here in the US, the ONLY system I know of is what we have. If the cops F up they should be prosecuted. All of them should be aware at all times that pulling that gun could be THE END for them too! Their ROE’s certainly should be tighter. The idea that you can roll up on a scene and open fire on a kid with a toy gun in his hand because you felt threatened and kill him is an affront to everyone and inexcusable, period.

Just an observation: It seems here on FR we have the guys/gals that will defend the cops no matter what they do and then we have the guys/gals that hate the cops no matter what they do. Just to be clear, I am in that group that tries to stay in the middle and stay balanced in our attitude towards cops knowing that each incident is different and has to be looked at very carefully.

It's a dimwit that judges by the group.

I've had a cop live in my house for 3 months during his divorce, he was as crooked as the day was long, but I was his friend, so I was safe.

I've worked with my local LE on local issues that they couldn't fix. But got resolved without them anyway.

I don't call police.

Ever.

Nothing good can come from it.

I don't hate or venerate LE.

I do think they are less than cost-effective, especially where citizens can carry.

Local PDs need their budgets cut hard.

You said that you think "But, your sentence about “don’t AIM guns” I don’t agree with IN ALL CASES!"

That's proposing rules of engagement.

Own it.

Not all cops are evil or incompetent.

Just 99% of them.

Johnny, thanks for your response to my post.

I don’t see much to agree or disagree with in it and frankly I do not understand some of it. However, your statement that I am proposing ROE’s is worth noting.

I, for one, do think there are differences between confronting a bank robber running out of a bank and confronting a woman with 4 kids or an 8 year old boy with a toy gun. But, that is where I STOP. I do not know enough to propose ANYTHING after that point. I will leave that to LE experts.

” But, that is where I STOP. I

ANYTHING after that point. I will leave

The problem is that LE experts are such by being in LE. That usually results in a very permissive attitude. That requires anoutside perspective to judge reasonableness. And those affected are not going to remain silent.

It is easy to see those not within a position can miss issues OF that position. But the reverse is also true. It is easy for those IN the position to minimize in their own minds the affects of their actions and attitude. And cops always see their affect on others as minimal. But their viewpoint is as colored as anny.

Don’t be ridiculous. It would also be unwise to startle or threaten a surgeon in the operating room—or a tight-rope walker—not to mention an armed policeman! Grow up!

Don't be a fool, J. Policemen are our servants, but it would be stupid to make one feel threatened. An armed man??? Grow up.

Don't scare a horse you're riding either. He's not your better, but don't do it.

You’re so right. I should just happily live in fear of a pig’s unreasoned fear. If a cop can’t control his fear, he is in the wrong profession.
You say grow up? I say grow a pair and value your own dignity as much as you value a cop’s comfort.

A "pig"???

You must be a "Liberal" troll. Only Leftist hippies refer to policemen as "pigs".

I should have known.

I don't tip toe around any man. I don't seek to startle any either.

I'll not treat LE any different than I treat the clerk at the auto-parts store.

Anything else is toadying. And I'm a free man. I won't do that.

Assume what you want, or check my posts. What you are doing is what people who refuse to question cops at all do. You assume the worst in everyone who has an issue with them. You want to make conservatism synonymous with unquestioning loyalty to LE.

I call them pigs, because that is what LE has become. Power tripping, cowardly, violence prone, incompetent trash. And lets not forget corrupt. There is no crime by a cop, that cops won’t willingly cover.

If I “Must” be a liberal troll because I have had enough of the crap from cops, then you “Must” be a Statist for supporting a police state mentality.

Couldn’t have expressed it better. I was not born to lick a cop’s boots for his amusement. I have my own sense of dignity, even if certain other people commenting here don’t.

The answer isn’t to toady up to cops. The answer is to FIX LE and rid it of the cowardice plaguing it.

Agreed, but it’s probably safe to say that if you see little children in the vehicle and they exit the vehicle, then there’s probably a good chance that ain’t the perp....
