The story reads that the one friend was warned but isn’t clear if the other friend was warned. They vacated the first restaurant and went to another restaurant that appeared deserted.
The two were stalked by a lynch mob:

You can count on the police not getting there until the mob leaves the area. After Ferguson, I doubt them wanting any contact with Blacks. So essentially, you are on your own.
