Ralph Weems IV, who was injured early Saturday, was in fair condition Sunday at North Mississippi Medical Center, hospital spokeswoman Genie Causey said without elaborating.

A relative, Bradley Barnes of Madison, told The Associated Press by telephone on Sunday that his brother-in-law was in a medically induced coma following brain surgery. "They're going to try and wake him up tomorrow and see what damage was done," Barnes said, describing Weems as a 32-year-old former Marine who had served in Iraq.

David Knighten of West Point told AP earlier by phone that he and Weems had gone to a Waffle House early Saturday. He said a man waved him over outside the restaurant and told him politely that people were upset by the killing of 18-year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and it wasn't a safe place for whites. When he went in, he said, Weems was inside and was arguing with other men.

Evidently. Sometimes you can be in the right and end up dead right. The pedestrian has the right of way over the automobile until he decides to exercise that right. After the confrontation, most of the time, he is dead right.

1 AM... 2AM ... a .45 caliber handgun ... the "wrong" neighborhood -- what could possibly go wrong? (I'm only wondering if "alcohol was involved".)

I do have every right to jog through Newark, New Jersey late at night, but my wife should have me committed if I ever expressed my intention to actually try that.

I read the story but I guessed I missed the part where he picked a fight. I read where he was arguing with some people in the waffle house, but there wasn't any info that he started the argument. Was there something I missed or did you find more information somewhere.

It takes two to argue. Arguing with black people in a black neighborhood isn't the best practice.

He was being beaten by a mob, and had a .45 caliber handgun. There was one way to very quickly stop the beating, why didn’t he do it?

He may have thought that being beaten up by a mob is preferable to being George Zimmerman and having your life be a day to day living hell.

The story is pretty light on facts so we don't know what was said only that a group of people beat the crap out of someone over a argument, oh I use the term people in this situation in the sense of animals because animals fight in packs.

If I’m driving through a strange area and see a “Waffle ...” restaurant, or a “...Fried Chicken” restaurant, or a check cashing place. I know I need to find somewhere else to be. There will be people who wear orange jumpsuits on a regular basis that need to be avoided, because they have nothing to lose. Might as well be walking around in the African wilderness facing off with wild lions and panthers.
