Ukraine celebrates Independence with sense of self and readiness to fight fiercely for freedom.
If the iron curtain comes back, Ukraine wants to be on the Western side and has no interest in joining Russia. The Ukrainian people may not all be on the same page with Kyiv government, but they want western liberties and business opportunities.
To Moscow the idea that Ukraine has the right to choose their own path escaping Kremlins influence is a source of instability and panic. They accuse the West of manipulating Ukraine protests and deny the idea that Ukrainian people may have been thinking for themselves.
Moscow failed to understand Ukraines story, or underestimated the Ukraine grassroots movement. From first days of independence, it wasnt easy to break Soviet economic ties, conduct political reforms and create currency and banking systems.
During Soviet times, Russian and Ukrainians were never the same, but Soviet ideology and propaganda unified them. Homo Soveticus united Russians, Ukrainians and people from other republics.
In the early 1990s, Ukrainian schools replaced Soviet history, with historical facts omitted before. Students learned: the struggle of living under Soviet oppression, deliberate famine in Ukraine under Stalin that wiped out more than 10,000 millionnow regarded as genocide and many intelligentsia arrested, shot or sent to Siberia.
When Ukrainian media started offering Ukraine-news and talk shows, division between Russian and Ukrainian increased, while memories of Soviet times began to fade. The East and West of Ukraine peacefully coexisted with Ukraines sovereignty never being challenged until Russias actions this year.

I have been advised that such DNR actions constitute grave violations of the laws of war and are punishable as war crimes. People in the Ukraine and outside the Ukraine should raise all kinds of Hell with the ICRC about its remaining silent about these kinds of war crimes.
