The video is shot from too far away to see a knife in his hand, but he was well within the 25' mark, more like 10', and if he did have a knife he could have easily gotten to the first officer. Assuming he had a knife it was totally justified IMHO.

All he had to do was comply. If he was that mentally ill or drugged up to not comprehend, I'm sorry, but too damn bad....

> I am so disgusted by this: I have not watched the video, but just because someone steals a couple dollars of something from somebody does not mean he should be riddled with bullets. What happened to the police arresting people? Police have gotten impatient. They don’t want to talk people down anymore. Or pull back and arrest them next time. It is disturbing.

A toxic climate has been created in Ferguson. Lawllessness now abounds as respect for the rule of law is just about gone. What you are seeing is the effects off removing G-d and his hand of protection from the U.S. while th Left bring Satan in disguising him as atheism or Islam.

A knife is considered a deadly weapon. Generally, the law permits the use of deadly force when confronted with deadly force. I’ve trained in martial arts and during our knife drills we were told repeatedly to assume that anyone with a knife 1) intended to use it and 2) intended to kill us. We were instructed not to disarm the assailant but to kill him. Period.

We trained with our bare hands. These cops were fortunate enough to have guns.

Frankly, I wouldn’t have given the piece of garbage a chance to drop it. Using the two rules I cited earlier, I would have shot him to death as soon as I had a clear field. Then the only problem becomes getting rid of the stain in the parking lot.

> He got riddled with bullets because he charged a cop brandishing a knife.

A knife can be just as deadly as a bullet If the perp stabs you full force. Ask any serial killer; they prefer it over guns.

Powell was carrying a knife and shouting, "Shoot me! Shoot me! Shoot me! Shoot me now, mother------!" as he approached the officers, news reports say.

Live like a gangsta, die like a gangsta.

The taser has to make contact. The other problem is hay there have been deaths from tasters, too, so some departments have scaled back on their use.

> Do these officers carry Tasers?

Let’s look. At the bigger picture. The cops shouldn’t even have to be dealing with idiots running around with knives taunting them. Nowadays I wouldn’t be surprised if the black kids are told to go find trouble with a cop and get shot because of the huge payday and attention it brings (s/). Hey it’s the culture we live in. You can thank Facebook and YouTube or starting it.

Watch this video of a similar situation in South America. Commentary on the incident: "And then everything failed"

The taser has to make contact. The other problem is hay there have been deaths from tasters, too, so some departments have scaled back on their use.

Conversely, a lot of times a taser won’t stop a really hopped up person. I remember a case where a crazy old woman attacked her family with a knife, they barricaded themselves in a room and screamed for help, the police arrived and the old lady charged them. They tased her and it didn’t even slow her down. One of them shot her just as she lunged at him.

Oh - and when the family got out of the room, guess what they did? Claimed police brutality. What else?

Thanks - it adds another detail that may have been missed in the articles. Police were following up on a report about a knife in his pocket.

“A convenience store owner called 911 on Tuesday when he suspected Powell stole drinks and donuts from his shop, according to a recording of the call. Another woman called to report Powell was acting erratically and had a knife in his pocket.”

Watch the CNN coverage. The pinhead wonders why the cops shot him, since he wasn’t charging the cops, only walking towards them, and didn’t raise the knife. A$$hole.

You are a good candidate for a ride along in south Memphis or Chicago. You are severely uninformed or naive.

I never saw a knife

Not sure how you saw much of anything. I watched the shooting a few times and noticed that the police opened fire when he swerved toward them, almost menacing or daring them to shoot, which they did.

The beginning of the video has the "videographer" walking up to a situation where the "thief" has placed two canned drinks on the curb and is just standing there. For anyone who didn't watch the video, there's nothing explicitly graphic about it (i.e. blood), but you do watch someone being killed, which is pretty messed up.

The thug taping this whole thing exemplifies the problem with American society. You should be talking to your neighbors and trying to "talk them off the ledge" before they even get to the point of police action. Return the damn drinks and walk away, and the most that would've happened is that the store owner would've been asked if he wanted to press charges.
