If convicted of first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer, he faces the death penalty.

Why should killing a cop be more heinous than killing a carpenter, or an ironworker, or electrician.

Sure there are inherent dangers in the job, but no one forced him(her) to take the job. How does that make them special? Inquiring minds want to know....

Florida is a state that has the death penalty as a potential punishment.

A first-degree murder charge automatically opens up the potential of a death penalty outcome, it does not depend upon the victims “job” at all, and is at the discretion of the prosecution.
