Even though IS is easier to type, and ISIS and ISIL are easier to say, I always write and say The Islamic State, or The Islamic Caliphate, which is what they call themselves, and more clearly conveys exactly who they are.

When dictators in Burma and Congo changed their country names, the reporters of the world changed to calling them Myanmar and Zaire. We should do no less for the Islamic State. Calling them "Isil" as Obama did today is only to hide who they really are.

A couple of things to add. Islamic State (IS) has an incredibly savvy marketing & branding tactics & approach. Whether it is releasing gruesome videos & photos (the latter was published on paper on the front page a major newspaper, I saw in a supermarket this morning), or selling cheap, branded T-shirts in Turkey manufactured in Indonesia, or using social media such as Twitter and Facebook, which allow Islamic State to have a global reach to either muslims or those looking for “exotic adventures”. Their example might also spur coups and uprisings in other “moderate” muslim nations. The Islamic State could grow in big jumps, even to other continents. That’s why it has to be smashed down now.
