~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Fort Bragg, North Carolina

Fort Bragg is a major United States Army installation located in Cumberland, Hoke, Harnett and Moore counties, North Carolina, mostly in Fayetteville but also partly in the town of Spring Lake.

The fort is named for Confederate general Braxton Bragg. It covers over 251 square miles. It is the home of the US Army airborne forces and Special Forces, as well as U.S. Army Forces Command and U.S. Army Reserve Command.

Fort Bragg, NC absorbed FORSCOM (Forces Command) and USARC (US Army Reserve Command) from Fort McPherson, GA in 2011 as an outcome of the 2005 BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure Commission).

Fort Bragg retained its name and increased its population by 25,000. The consolidation made Fort Bragg the largest US Army command for sustained forces capable of worldwide crisis response.

There are 29,183 people, 4,315 households, and 4,215 families residing on the base. The base is the one of the main garrisons for deployments to IRAQ & Afghanistan wars. The units based at the mission have conducted two, three, or even four or more deployments to combat zones in IRAQ & Afghanistan.

Fort Bragg is tasked to maintain America’s Contingency Corps as a strategic crisis response force manned and trained to deploy rapidly by air, sea, and land anywhere in the world with the ability to fight upon arrival. The major units are XVIII Airborne Corps, 82nd Airborne Division, The Golden Knights, FORSCOM and USARC.

Tenant organizations at Fort Bragg include MEDDAC (Medical Command), Womack Army Medical Center, Special Forces, and John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School.

Understand that.

Funny time of year.

I plan on retiring in Dec 2015 and my badge will expire around end of July that year, which means I’ll have to get a renewed badge for only 4 months. Then not longer before that time, I’ll be going through the “check out” process.

Looking forward to the end of it but all that has to be done before it may be a pain.

Hi, beachn:

North Carolina was an early contender, but most of the properties were in college towns. And a bit too far to travel for family and friends.

VA is more tax and Second Amendment friendly than Maryland would ever think of being. It’s a brave move and I’m confident of completing my first year’s lease and an easier life. If something more attractive doesn’t catch my eye in the interim.

I know...I am so ready to move out of MD; and VA, NC and DE are on my list.

Been looking but haven't found it yet.

I was just surprised that you moved to Fairfax, being how expensive and congested northern VA is.

Yes, I agree. A.S. Johnston was a great loss.

My people served under Joe Johnston (no relation). A hard-fighting general but not as brilliant as A.S.

WOW! That’s quite a move for the furry kids. They will settle in with Dad.

Happy snowless winters and huge mowing summers.
