Many of the principals of the July 20 plot ahd been posted to Kluge’s HQ at Army Group Center In Smolensk. Kluge knew of their activities, even though he did not directly participate. There was no way he was going to escape Freisler’s Volkshofgericht.

Kluge was a vacillating double-dealer. The best that can be said for him is he was a man of weak character who thought he was doing his duty.

“a man of weak character “ Not from what Ive read, and know of the man. He strongly objected to Adolf Hitler's aggressive foreign policy and was appalled by the antisemitism shown by the Nazi party, and as a result he was “dismissed” from the army in 1938. A man of his position, and standing against the Party in ‘38 and risking his career is a man of “weak character”. Kluge also developed innovative tactics involving the use of armor. Promoted to Field Marshal after the invasions of Poland ‘39, Low Countries and France in’40.In ‘41-'43
he repeatedly bested the defenders in Ukraine and Russia. He was involved in histories largest Tank battle Kursk. He ended up on the losing side in that one. Throughout the rest of his career it would continue to be that way up to the Falaise Gap in which it was reported that he tried to surrender the remainder of his troops so as to save there lives. Supposedly to Patton. Being that he didn't involve himself directly in the assassination attempt on Hitlers life (of which there where at least 40 previous attempts) does not make him a weak character.Quite the opposite. IMHO.
