Missouri Governor Jay Nixon disturbed by 'over-militarization' of police in Ferguson
Daily Mail ^ | 17 August 2014 | Alex Greg for MailOnline

"Missouri Governor Jay Nixon said he was 'thunderstruck' by images he saw of police forces responding to protests in Ferguson after the shooting of teenager Michael Brown as the midnight to 5am curfew enters its second night.

Nixon, speaking to ABC News' Martha Raddatz on This Week on Sunday, said the sight of police in riot gear with armored tanks led to his decision to replace the local police force with highway patrol.

The measure had a calming effect at first, but last night saw one man shot and seven arrested after resisting the curfew order. A picture has emerged of the young man lying wounded on the ground.

'All of us were thunderstruck by the pictures we saw,' Nixon said."

And his state police aren’t armed this way?

This idiot like all of the media is acting like the Ferguson police force of 50, had all that hardware that was seen. That was St. Louis County police, IIRC.

Is he nuts? I hope people in Missouri are calling his office and giving him hell. This was a riot, not a traffic stop. Does this jerk think the police should go into a situation like that with just handguns?

Anyone remember the gunfight in LA where the cops were totally out-gunned by the criminals? That is when police started to carry more powerful weapons and have greater protective gear. Sheesh.

Would be interesting to see how many grants he has accepted from Homeland Security for this purpose.

From the msm tweet at your link, “There are perhaps 125 people at this pro-Darren Wilson protest. 124 white people and Martin Baker, aged 44”.

Media has a BIG BLAME in all this racial hatred since the election of, “the One”. They should hang their heads in shame and should be accountable for the blood on their hands.

I’m disturbed that Jay Nixon is the Governor of Missouri.

Translation: “I was told all the new shines machine guns and MRAPs were for use on the white, Christian, gun owning males, not our most reliable voters!”

“Anyone remember the gunfight in LA where the cops were totally out-gunned by the criminals?”

I remember. I live in Los Angeles. And I’m sick of everyone using one well-armed gang of bank robbers as a club to beat the rest of us into submitting to a MILITARY police force being unleashed on every city and small town in this country. They bash down doors in the middle-of-the night to terrorize (just like soldiers), toss flash grenades on babies (just like soldiers), and swagger in camo atop gun turrets on armored vehicles like the United States was downtown Kabul.

Except they’re not soldiers — they’re civil service workers who work for us. They’re DMV clerks with guns, and they should look like us and talk like us — not bark “orders” at reporters and arrest citizens for “disobeying” — when the lawful authority — the governor — has not declared martial law.

By the way, all the North Hollywood bank robbers were apprehended, one killed. Those jackasses got off a lot of rounds, but how were the police “outgunned?” Ultimately, they got the weapons they needed from a gun shop and prevailed.

These shaved-head jackboot-wearing cops’ dress-up games would be comical if they weren’t so dangerous to the U.S. citizenry, because they’re armed like soldiers.

Cops playing soldier is a path we’re all going to regret going down.

When was the last time you saw the cops out on the streets like that? A riot demands military tactics and equipment.

I can tell you exactly when. In 2011, one thousand LAPD were mobilized and cordoned off a four-square mile area in my LA suburb because of a reported officer shooting that turned out to be a hoax (the cop discharged his own weapon).

But the search and the blockade went on for fifteen hours. Nobody allowed in cars or on foot in or out of the neighborhood. I was trapped in my house. Cops on every corner in body armor with machine guns slung over their shoulders. Armored vehciles blocking the intersections. When neighbors and I finally ventured out and approached the cop at our corner to ask when family members could return from work and school, he wouldn’t even speak to us — he just screamed that we had to go back inside immediately or we’d be arrested. He put his hand on his rifle butt and started jabbering into his radio for “back-up.” Against the dangerous mob.

And THAT was a military operation. And it was martial law. Declared by... whom? Not the mayor. Not the governor. If you’re ordered to stay inside and threatened with arrest and weapons for “disobeying,” I don’t know what else to call it.

I’m still reeling from it, and this was not an isolated event. The Boston bomber? Same story. On whose authority was martial law declared that day? Because that’s what it was. And it was a military operation on American soil.

Perhaps the Guv needs to get out of the mansion and live in Ferguson without body guards and see if his tune changes.

But those residents were happy with the police——and the outcome.

I live in this country as much as Bostonians do, and the fact that martial law was declared (only they didn’t have the guts to actually say it, just arrest or shoot you if you defied it) and a military operation launched on American soil to catch two guys should outrage every American.

He maybe disturbed, but neither he nor anybody else in either party will do a damn thing about pulling back on the militarization of the police at all levels.

It was going on under Bush and it was going on under the Governor's precious Obama, and Congressional Republicans and Democrats alike aren't working on stopping it.

I’m all for it; the sooner everyone loses their illusions, the easier it will be on us to end up bringing more over into the adulthood. Even the holdovers from the Sixties hippies are seeing them as they are for once in their sorry lives.
