After following this case, day and night (last night until 2:30am), the consensus (most likely truth) is that The officer didn't know when he first passed Mike, but that the announcement had come of the radio giving a description, and after Mike and friend yelled "NO" (in response to being told to get off the street) and he started backing up his mind 'clicked' as he realized this was one of the alleged perps.

This was based on the recount by a friend of the officer who relayed the story to a radio call-in show which VERIFIED that the caller was who he claimed to be.

...MB & his partner had to suspect they had been reported to police and APB put out in the area.

When stopped, the LEO may not have known it was them, but they knew it was them and would go to jail if identified.
