Protesters and Police Face Off Again on Ferguson Streets

FERGUSON, Mo. — Unrest returned to the streets of this St. Louis suburb early Saturday as hundreds of demonstrators, angered by the shooting death of an unarmed African-American teenager by a police officer, engaged in a standoff with the police that was punctuated by threats and a new round of denunciations of law enforcement practices.

The confrontation, the first serious one since the Missouri State Highway Patrol on Thursday assumed responsibility for security operations here, ended at about 4 a.m. when the authorities, prompted by the gradual dispersal of demonstrators, pulled back to their nearby command post. The Associated Press reported that one law enforcement official had been injured overnight.

The unrest capped an extraordinary day of events that has roiled this community since the teenager, Michael Brown, 18, was fatally shot by a police officer last Saturday while walking home from a convenience store with a friend.

On Friday, the police chief of Ferguson, Thomas Jackson, said at a news conference that the officer who shot Mr. Brown was Darren Wilson, who has served on the Ferguson force for four years and in another local department for two years and who had no disciplinary charges. Officer Wilson, who is white, has been placed on leave, and his location is unknown.

But the release of his name was overshadowed by the simultaneous announcement that Mr. Brown was a suspect in a robbery at a convenience store shortly before his death, leading to questions about the timing of the announcement and the motives behind it. Surveillance videotapes released by the Ferguson police appeared to show Mr. Brown shoving a store clerk aside as he took a box of cigarillos.

Who would still want to be a cop in Ferguson after this? Or in any city that was predominantly black? They are walking targets whenever they are in uniform.

Such crap. These incidents are just excuses for those who know they can get away with looting and mayhem afterwards. They don’t care about justice or peace. They are criminals and nobody has the guts to shoot them on sight, which is what they deserve.

It’s not about militarization. Further militarization would not help either. It’s about the unwillingness of the police to actually open fire on looters and arsonists.

Of course, appeasing bad behavior only invites more of it. This garbage would stop if people got tougher.

But unfortunately we see that appeasement mentality everywhere, with the rioters/looters, with our military rules of engagement, 20 year death row stays etc.

and its only getting worse, (sigh)

I would just advise anyone if they have a business near or in a bad neighborhood buy a gun and shoot the looters yourself.

In spite of what the "community" thinks the white cops are probably the only thing left in that town keeping it from devolving into complete anarchy.

Maybe someone should grant their wish and let them run that sewer themselves, see if it gets better, haha, not likely.

Thanks.

I should have known that the NAACP and other victim's industry people would have already posted current photos of the threats and terror African-Americans suffer. :)

“They were “ordered” by Missouri State Patrol to “STAND DOWN” and not to stop the looters last night.”

That was what David Dinkins did in NYC during the Crown Heights riot, and the outflow of wealth and jobs permanently damaged NYC.

lol When I read his books I had to do the same thing. Way back when he was the only conservative voice on TV and kicked shit everytime with the other (whoever) was debating him...laughed when he ran for mayor of New York (or was it governor) I think he told a reporter what he would do if he ran and won....call for an immediate recount was his answer...
