Timothy Ash: West may be telling Ukraine to stand on its own against Russia
Kyiv Post ^ | Aug. 15, 2014, 3:16 p.m. | Timothy Ash

The most interesting thing over the past 24 hours was the Russian military convoy passing through the border into Ukraine, witnessed and photographed by Western and even Russian media outlets.

And, more remarkably, has been the muted reaction from the West and indeed from the Western media. Some 4-5 weeks ago, the White House PR machine would have been going into overdrive, and warning of new sanctions iterations in the pipeline unless Russia “de-escalated.” Thus far nothing we have seen next to nothing of note.

Officially the Russian Ministry of Defense has denied the convoy exists/crossed – but the evidence is as conclusive as it could be from the tweets/snaps by the Guardian/London Telegraph/Novy Vremya. I sense this denial was tongue in cheek. But what is more important, I think the Russians wanted everyone to see this convoy crossing the border. Journalists were guided to the border crossing by the convoy of Russian white humanitarian trucks – and then the military convoy just appeared, turned right and crossed the border in front of the journalists. Russia wanted everyone to see that it has the capacity to cross the border into Ukraine at will – even with full Russian military regalia.

It would seem as though Russia is goading/testing the West – to see the Western sanctions response.

“I think the Russians wanted everyone to see this convoy crossing the border.”

I said that yesterday...
There are plans within plans currently in operation. Meanwhile, Great Leader Obama and his minions aren’t even in the game.

The Alinsky tactics aren’t working against someone that has read Machiavelli.

Obama helped forced Ukraine to give its military weapons and now is helping Russia take over.

Both Antonio Gramsci and Saul Ailinsky failed to account for the possibility of their endeavors being countered by determined military force. And both build followings largely incapable of fighting.

This is part of why Western Socialists enter into toxic alliances which ultimately will work out for them about as well as it worked out for Christopher Stevens. They need something to use as a military proxy.

They already have...

Finland is already talking about “Easing” the sanctions, because of the damage the counter-sanctions are doing to their economy:

EU sanctions on Russia could be gradually eased - Finland Foreign Minister
http://uk.reuters.com/article/2014/08/08/uk-ukraine-crisis-finland-formin-idUKKBN0G81OO20140808

Finland, Spain, and Poland are already calling for compensation from the EU for the Counter-sanctions, and it has only been a few days. The Russians knew exactly who and what to hit to put cracks in the EU support.

And winter is getting ever closer....

Looks like Russia just put down its bet and calls. Putin, stone faced, is playing poker and Obama thinks he’s playing hearts.

Obama doesn't give a bleep about Ukraine.

Only a few Putin-reads-Machiavelli defenders and a few cavemen don't understand that now.

“Putin, stone faced, is playing poker and Obama thinks he’s playing hearts”

Diplomatically, America (and therefore, the EU) is at its lowest position of influence since just before the Barbary Wars.

We no longer guide events, we react to them.
Our allies no longer trust us, can no longer depend on us, and our enemies, both actual and potential, no longer fear us.

If we had a real press, that wasn’t afraid of losing their jobs for asking Obama a tough question, they might inquire to Obama’s face how his “Soft Power” Doctrine is working out, for us, and the whole world.

“Obama doesn’t give a bleep about Ukraine.”

If you check back to the beginning of this, you will recall that I have said that exact same thing, many times.

This was all about getting back at Putin for Syria, and it has boomeranged badly.

Obama has a lot more flexibility now the election is over.

I still don't agree. This is all about Putin's attempt to control Ukraine against the wishes of the people of Ukraine.

Folks who have been following this conflict thread-after-thread for over a decade understand that. Folks who knew nothing about this conflict until last fall or winter and who think RT is a serious news source don't.

Yet we have people who ignore Obama's lethargy toward Ukraine and think he is masterminding some kind of plan against Putin.

Obama thinks he’s playing hearts.

Hearts, golf, vacation, fund raising, speeches all about I, me, cause he is #1. Obama is a legend in his own mind.

You cannot ignore the larger political context in which this is happening. There is a lot more going on than just Ukraine, and has been. Or the ideology behind the folks in the White House, and how they operate.

I don’t get this article. I’ve seen lots of comments from European leaders about the hardware moving across the border. Whether that will be backed by any action, we’ll see (I doubt it), but still, I think this article jumped the gun.
