A caller who identified himself as Joe told Savage he had been contemplating suicide for the past several months, especially in the past week.

Joe said that when he learned of Williams’ suicide, he asked himself, “If a guy like that could, why not me?”

But on his show Tuesday, Savage, who disclosed he and Williams lived in the same San Francisco-area neighborhood, urged any listeners who might be considering suicide to think about how it would affect their loved ones.

Joe was tuned in.

“Your show yesterday – I’m not going to say prevented me – but it did make me think about my kids and my wife,” the caller said.

Savage said he met Williams many times when the two were walking their dogs.

“Our dogs knew each other quite well,” he said on his show Tuesday. “We never talked politics, because we were at opposite ends of the spectrum.”

50 other callers called in to say his show was driving them toward it.

Midway through the show he gave the suicide hotline and said no more calls on the topic.
Some of the calls were pretty emotional, but I think he made the right choice to have his screener direct the calls over to the hotline

Maybe it’s 25 years of Prosecuting. Maybe it’s just being old. Maybe it’s having nothing but contempt for pundits. But ... sure sounds like a setup caller to me. I do not believe it.

i don’t think all suicides are equal. or for the same reasons.

i think if you’re facing impossible odds in a fight, and you know you’re not making it out alive and really would rather not die, but you don’t want to permit the enemy to torture and kill you, i think that is a different animal.

i think for some people overwhelmed by something in the moment, or for those that have a genuine brain chemical imbalance that twists reality where they can’t see any other way out, i know whatever, God will be perfectly fair in judgment.

I have said that exact same thing about suicide for years. Glad Michael helped someone out of a jam.
