'This Is Not Open For Discussion' — Massive SWAT Team Tells Peaceful Protesters In Ferguson To Leave

A large police SWAT team showed up to a peaceful demonstration in Ferguson, Missouri and the scene is getting increasingly tense, reports Huffington Post's Ryan J. Reilly, who is currently on the ground.

Soon after the team of more than 70 officers came on the scene, they told protesters they needed to leave the area and that "this [was] not open for discussion," Reilly tweeted. MSNBC reporter Trymain Lee tweeted that police told the crowd, "Go home, return to your vehicles. The protesters responded, "Mike can't go home!"

"Your right to assembly is not being denied," the police said later over a loudspeaker.

When did we accept the idea that “Peace officers” were warriors?

I don't, and I've never known a warrior to shoot a pet dog or rough up a journalist, but If I had to guess quick, I'd say 'acceptance' was a slow creep that started with Iran/Contra, Miami/Columbia - the war on drugs. Nobody cared about specialized crews in the 70's slogging it out in Nicaraguan jungles. Nobody cared when those crews became backup for the DEA on the domestic scene. Fighting drugs and all. Miami Vice was the number one weekly show. Rah Rah.

Then police depts got their own teams with War on Drug grants and War on Terrorism grants. Ruby Ridge 1992. Waco 1993. Senate hearings. But lookie lookie Clinton is soooo handsome! Hispanics show up in large numbers in American prisons and gangs organize against black and white gangs over criminal enterprises. The government pours surplus weapons into the copshops for next to free. Gotta fight the gangs and keep our streets safe. Save the Children! Iraq/Iraq/Afganistan. The government acts like an arms dealer, only to American police departments, and all that porkbarrel surplus trickles down to everybody but street cops - who are left picking up the pieces after the yahoos roll back to the barn.

Granted it's an argueably simplistic explanation, but that's the best guess perspective I can give you off the top of my head as to how we got from blue uniforms to desert camo in 40 years without much public fuss.

what’s the difference if a press release going out to all broadcast and print outlets?

A press release is not a city ordinance and does not carry the weightof law....I also saw this earlier and the chief was asked directlyif therewas a curfew and said no....

also, molatov cocktails were being thrown - if you page down thru the videos/pics there is an AP pic of a man at a bus stop with a molatov in-hand (Jeff Roberson/AP photo).

Thanks, Crim. I didn’t know there was a more formal process to it.

Well I’m also not sure that the mayor can’t simply declare an emergency and order a curfew....

The flip side is they’ve had 2-3 days of protestors turning into rioting looters.

There are no easy answers here.

nope, they were arrested and went thru processing. Mug shot and all. You are only detained at the scene, if they put you in the back of the police car and drive off, you are arrested.

Unfortunately, you are correct. And one man with 100 guns will not prevail against 100 policemen with just one gun each. The American ideal of rugged individualism is a weakness in response to organized state action.

Tyrants don’t have to kill all their enemies, just enough to ensure the populace is scared and willing to cooperate. The irony is that those who support the rise of tyranny are generally it’s first victims.

If the people are not committing a crime, no they don’t. The streets are public property, to be used by the public. The Supreme Court overturned the vagrancy laws long ago.

I think this is just a warm-up to the main show and that will be with the illegals.

Recall in 2006 the illegals had protest in every city all at the same time.

Some of those protest were around 1 million.

St Louise is a very special place for radical Hispanics.

To the radical Hispanics, the Gateway to the West arch represents the white man stealing Hispanic land.

Perfect target for a terrorist attack.

Tie the terrorist in with the rioting illegals and you’ve got yourself a ready made foreign army on American soil waging war against the US.

Obama and federal troops take control.

That’s where this is headed.

We have battering rams and helicopters flying 24 hours a day.

Now do they just throw these battering rams into the air, or do they have their own wings and engines?

...And the hippies that I despised 45 years ago might have been right about the cops after all.

Maybe, only now, they're running the place.

You are unaware how our state of Maryland was held hostage, including local government officials. Guns trained upon the city and all. “Union” by force so they could keep their butts in our DC.

I think the local PD has 40 or so officers. This SWAT team must be Sheriff, State or a combo.
