Investigators say they have discovered the case which sparked the West Africa pandemic, as Rwandan authorities quarantine the country's first suspected Ebola patient

A toddler who died in a Guinea border town just before Christmas last year was the “patient zero” who sparked the Ebola crisis, according to reports.

The two-year-old boy was from Guéckédou, a jungle village which lies on the country’s border with Liberia and Sierra Leone – two countries which have been badly affected by the deadly virus....

Did the baby get ebola from the mother (who also got infected somehow)?

Have they determined how “patient zero” got it? Or just determined “household zero”?

How would a toddler get the first infection? Bat bite? Playing with a dead bat’s corpse?

Meanwhile Spain said it had obtained a dose of a US-made experimental Ebola drug to treat a Spanish missionary priest evacuated from Liberia last week after testing positive for the killer virus.

A vector to Spain?

“Nigeria, which on Monday said its number of confirmed cases had risen to 10, faces the added problem that public doctors are on strike over pay and working conditions and have resisted calls by the government to end their strike to tackle the Ebola crisis. “

Now THIS is amazing. Africa at it’s finest.

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

Do 2 years olds eat much raw bush meat? Or would one of their parents prepare it (and possibly transmit it via breastfeeding or cleaning etc.)?

In 1850 there was a widespread outbreak of cholera in London. Patient zero was an infant. Her diapers were rinsed out and the germ went into their inadequate cesspool in the basement and leaked into the well at Golden Square. Two men mapped the area and established that the well was the source and eventually had it locked down. This was the first time that it was established that cholera is spread by water. Previously and actually for a long time afterwards, it was believed that it was the miasma, the vapors, that spread it and all disease. The book about this is fascinating... The Ghost Map by, I think, Johnson. They still don’t know where ebola comes from exactly but suspect it comes from one or more wild animal.

If the child was the first victim, then the child must have procured the meat himself/herself.

Scientists are so "smart". I wouldn't convict this child of spreading the disease unless some prosecutor can make the case that this kid and no other family member initiated transmission.

At that age it seems like everything ends up in their mouths.

Windfall fruit (contaminated with fruit bat guano--the bats are a reservoir species), or merely touching something loaded with the virus and putting their fingers in their mouth would be enough to contract the disease.

The child may have died first, more susceptible due to weaker immune system.

However, who first contracted the virus is still unknown. Only the household zero may be identified.

That is so weird you said that. The other night I had a dream, can’t remember much now and didn’t think much of it then but a woman in my dream had a huge black/red lesion on her upper thigh and a small black child next to her had been bitten by a spider. It was sick but did not die. Truly weirdo dream. I have had more dreams lately that I have had in my whole life.

This is truly becoming a “perfect storm” so to speak. All that seems needed for this to really break open is a true life “Campion” a la “The Stand”.

We almost had one on the nationalized American from Liberia. Had he survived another week...
