Makes one wonder just how long we can survive this madness.

The country won't. Power given to the government or assumed by the government is never given up. Even the best of the Freedom loving conservatives when they get elected think well they could use that power constructively so it shouldn't be given up but rather used properly. Once it gets so far as it has the only way to turn it over is with violent revolution and that almost surely would replace one tyranny with another. Our own Revolution in the 18th century was an already free people throwing off essentially a foreign tyranny that had not had the resources or the power to rule closely and directly. In that sense it was not a revolution but rather a Displacement. The French replay was a revolution under a pervasive domestic government and it brought Le Directoire and the Guillotine, and eventually spawned Marx and Stalin.
