I’ve thought about that as well. I don’t recall President and Mrs. Bush go on any vacations except to Camp David or Crawford. The LSM always made a big deal about him going to Crawford, yet, it didn’t cost extra for houses/hotels for them or the SS agents or WH staff. IIRC they had rooms for SS and I believe he built a building for meetings and press briefings. I also don’t recall him taking a huge fleet of autos with him wherever he went.
As contemporary presidents all have done - there is a rather large contingent of vehicles. It is just part of the deal any more. BUT - as you pointed out indirectly, the current occupier of the White House has grown the presidential travel corps exponentially - and drags them all over on their family vacations, all on the taxpayer’s dime.
The term for Obama is “Hubris”...
