Ukrainian forces encircle rebel-held city, talk of truce collapses

Artillery shells slammed into the outskirts of the Ukrainian city of Donetsk on Sunday as government forces tightened the noose around the rebel-held redoubt and called on pro-Russian separatists to surrender.

To the east of Donetsk, government forces and the separatists were fighting for control of the town of Krasny Luch, a rail and road junction through which Kiev says the rebels are receiving supplies of Russian military equipment.

Talk of a ceasefire, a possibility raised by a separatist leader on Saturday, evaporated as Kiev government forces kept up an offensive to crush the rebels.

Ukrainian military spokesman Andriy Lysenko said if the rebels wanted a ceasefire this meant "raising white flags and putting down their guns".

There would be no truce while the Ukrainian army continued "punitive" military action, the rebels retorted in a statement.

The forces that call themselves “separatists” are the terrorists who shot down a commercial airliner for Putin. They should surrender, repent of their crimes and denounce Putin for his stupidity.

Somedays it sounds as if Putin will invade and annex a slice of the eastern Ukraine. Other days, it sounds as if he’s letting this become his Bay of Pigs—an invasion that for political reasons, he’s decided not to overtly support once it gets into trouble.

Carrying the historical analogy further, maybe the Ukrainians would request Western ICBMs (with nukes, I suppose) on their soil to deter their powerful neighbor from repeat attempts. Shades of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

I hope not.

Rebels are claiming the encirclement failed:
http://slavyangrad.org/2014/08/10/overcoming-august-9-2014/

As the article notes, while Kiev seems increasingly desperate, including sending the 24th straight back into battle after a months-long encirclement, that the rebels just don’t have the mobile reserves to counter these moves until after the fact.

Kiev sends these unit on deep penetrations, but doesn’t seem to have the strength/leadership to secure the flanks. Then they get eaten up as the rebels respond.

Could happen. We already got Rusky planes testing our air defenses. A a US sub chased away from Russian waters?

It would be nice if they could capture a Russian soldier or 2. Put them on the web along with their hometown and family name. See if the Russkies are lying.

Shades of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

More like shades of Chosin Reservoir...

in the past 24 hours, the military had "continued successful offensive operations, considerably tightening the circle around the capital of the Donbass, Donetsk". He added: "The (separatist) fighters are in panic and chaos.

[~~sound of harps for flashback scene ~~] After the successful U.N. amphibious assault at Inchon in 1950 and the subsequent virtual annihilation of the North Korean's army, it seemed that the Korean War would soon be over. Douglas MacArthur's forces had attacked the fleeing remnants of enemy into their home country and were pressing toward China.

And then what happened? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

This is turning into a WWII situation. One side had better kill all of the other side or the killing will just continue by the losing side turning to guerilla warfare.

Putin doesn’t care . . . he probably saw this as an opportunity to clear-out some deadwood in his own country.

The killing is just getting started. You ain’t seen nothing yet. Russia killed over 20,000 over their own civilians in Chechnya. Neo-Stalinists like Putin consider thousands dead to be a historical footnote. You can see that attitude in their reaction to the MH17 “accident”. Even after the butchery of 83 kids by Russia on MH17 Putinists gladly carry water Putin.

When the going gets tough the tough get, uh, going

Ukraine’s Russian rebel leader called it quits yesterday, and named his own replacement. Alexander Borodai is the self-proclaimed prime minister of the so-called Donetsk Republic. In a news conference, Borodai announced his resignation and appointed an ethnic Ukrainian as the new prime minister.

Borodai is a former Russian military commander who served alongside Igor Girkin, known in eastern Ukraine as Igor Strelkov and whose name translates as “the shooter.” It was Strelkov who allegedly used Russian social media to take credit for shooting down Malaysian flight 17 last month, until rebels realized that the plane was a civilian passenger aircraft.

Borodai and Strelkov led pro-Russian separatists fighters in Transnistria, the breakaway province of Moldova. Both men have lamented the collapse of the Soviet Union and spoken of reconstituting some form of Russian supremacy in the former Soviet republics across the region. Borodai has run several newspapers as an editor in Moscow, and several Russian media reports say that he purportedly served as a former deputy director with the rank of major-general in the FSB (KGB). Borodai has consistently denied any connection to the FSB.

The Kyiv Post has reported that Borodai recently returned from Moscow where he was supposedly conducting business related to the Donetsk Republic. Borodai introduced his replacement, Alexander Zakharchenko, by saying, “I am a Muscovite.” Borodai then explained that it was time for the movement to be led by a Donetsk native.”

Actually, Ukraine had the world's 3rd-largest nuclear missile force when it became independent (courtesy of USSR remnants). They surrendered all their nukes in return for a treaty, signed by USA, UK and Russia guaranteeing their territorial integrity.

It seems to me that, in light of their actions in Crimea, we should declare ALL treaties or agreements with Russia to be null and void.

I’m aware of Ukraine’s arsenal, or ex-arsenal. The USA has shrunken too much to honor its guarantees, and maybe a guarantee in Russia’s backyard was stupid to give.

So the Ukrainians are winning without US troops or significant military aid. A country of 45 million with their own arms industry doesn’t need American troops to save them, if they have the will to fight.
