Students Challenge Texas Voter ID Law in Court
Time Magazine ^ | Aug 8, 2014 | Maya Rhodan

Abbott said requiring voters to present government issued IDs is “the first step in the process is to ensure that only those that are legally allowed to vote actually vote.”

Under the law, seven forms of identification are accepted at Texas polling stations, among them state drivers’ licenses and identification cards, election identification certificates, military IDs, passports, citizenship documents with photos, and concealed handgun licenses. And noticeably absent from that list: student identification cards.

Ryan Haygood, director for the Legal Defense Fund’s political participation group, said student IDs were specifically left off the list because they fail to prove whether a student is a citizen or a resident, though he said there have been no instances of student non-citizens attempting to vote in person.

Younger voters tend to vote disproportionately Democratic, and laws passed in Texas and elsewhere increasing restrictions on student IDs have been pushed by Republicans.

really???

no..

Really???

You must be joking.. I wonder what their school requires for ID to become a student..

I’ll bet they want something from the list needed to vote.

BTW TX I am sure has a free or low cost method to obtain the required ID provided they can prove they meet the standard for said ID.

Good catch on the word students.
They could be anybody.

Again, if they were likely to vote republican, this whole issue would be shut down quickly.

“I think that having a municipal ID card helps us align with the welcoming city Austin is,” Touza-Medina said. “It would help these immigrants access an array of local services that they may not be able to access without a government form of identification.” -

It’s nice you come from a family of heroes and veterans.

But telling a sob story of your granddad not bothering to get a passport is exactly the type of sob story the Dems are looking for.

Poor veteran can’t vote because he doesn’t have a passport. Please...

Did he drive? If he had a driver’s license that would do it. And you can also get a picture ID from the DMV if you don’t drive.

'This 18 year old voting law started during the Viet nam war among other crazy things that happened during that time in response'

You know why. If one can get drafted and sent off to Vietnam at 18, one should at least be able to vote as well.

That’s what I remember about it.

As soon as people start thinking that the government words for them, not the other way around, they can stop acting like powerless victims.

Liberals don’t think that way. Republicans do.

If republicans act like they can change things back and adhere to the constitution, they’ll have to act responsible.

But they don’t want that. Too much change too much to lose.

they would end up where they don’t want to be - faced with the choice to fix the abortion decision.

They don’t want to do that, so they pretend they can’t, while they lead down this path of wimpiness in which we pretend we have moral upperhand.

Well, we are wavering on every world conflict that needs our attention, while most men don’t know or care about what’s happening, and mot women do and think what the oprah world or their friends tell them to think about all of the abuse of power and murder.

It’s the same as abortion.

And that’s why we have 18 year olds voting. That territory was ceded and now we have a voting bloc of mind numbed university students.

But we do not have to.

Heck they’re not even adults until they are 26 according to obamacare. What are they voting for?

Of course he had a drivers license, AND A voters registration card. He never needed a passport. There was no sob story involved, just reminding the poster that a passport is an optional government ID obtained by those traveling out of country. So far your pResident hasn't required an internal passport.

My first passport was paid for by the Army. That's as it should have been, as my travel was on their behalf.

My son, who was born overseas, needed a US passport for entry into the US. The army didn’t issue me that son, so I paid for his. A small investment, which was certainly worth the price.

Once I was discharged it became my responsibility to pay for my renewals.

So does that city ID allow them to vote?

I hope not, but what difference would that make in San Fran on the Colorado?

Austin is LOST as a Texas city. I give them a few more years and it will be worse than Detroit.
