CDC Issues Highest Emergency Alert Amid Ebola Outbreak
NBC News ^ | August 6, 2014 | nbcnews.com

Posted on 08/06/2014 4:57:42 PM PDT by John W

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Wednesday ramped up its response to the expanding Ebola outbreak, a move that frees up hundreds of employees and signals the agency sees the health emergency as a potentially long and serious one.

The CDC’s “level 1 activation” is reserved for the most serious public health emergencies, and the agency said the move was appropriate considering the outbreak’s “potential to affect many lives.” The CDC took a similar move in 2005 in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and again in 2009 during the bird-flu threat.

Don't worry stanne, if these two infected Americans aren't the nucleus for an Ebola outbreak in the USofA, SOMEONE will advocate importing more and more and more sick people until an outbreak finally starts.

Well, I have no pretzel problems..

A deployment to Africa would be in response to a need in Africa, not the US.

Similar to earthquake relief operations. Not protecting and defending.

Simply humanitarian.....but it’s not that bad...yet..

Only 800+ deaths so far and it may be leveling out.

We do not send troops expressly on missions to take care of Ebola patients

""DoD News, Defense Media Activity WASHINGTON, Aug. 1, 2014 – Defense Department personnel are on the ground in West Africa and in U.S. laboratories fighting to control the worst outbreak in the African history of the Ebola virus""

From the Navy Times"
""The U.S. military, and in particular, the Army, has had a longstanding mission in preventing and treating infectious and parasitic diseases in troops, dating to the late 1800s.

The Armed Forces Press Service reported late Friday that military health workers, including an entomologist from the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases, already are in the affected area providing support ranging from logistical assistance to “clinical management” — assisting in treating affected populations.

“DoD personnel bring a level of excellence second to none, working in response to host nations and WHO in the most-affected countries of Sierra Leone and Liberia,” Army Col. James Cummings, a physician and director of the Global Emerging Infections Surveillance and Response System at the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Center told AFPS.""

Of course, as I SAID, if it’s in the interest of protecting and defending the country
This is a waste of time

Pretzel logic

My elderly parents have already told me if they catch Ebola.....for me NOT to help them or not get around them. Just let them die.

I can’t believe we even HAD that conversation. :/

How far are you going to go in this pretense?

You did not know that the military was involved in Africa did you?

Only 800+ deaths so far and it may be leveling out.

On what grounds do you suggest it may be leveling out?

I am worried about sporadic reports of people being tested in New York, Columbus, Lagos (Nigeria), and Jeddah (Saudi Arabia)... Panic is bad ; so is misplaced confidence.

Yes. Just like when they issued a “level 1 activation” for ‘bird flu’.

Oh the humanity!

How many Americans died from that? Must of been millions.

I think so, but I’m not sure it’s that simple. It certainly didn’t happen without government approval, though. Take into account especially 0bama’s EO.

It’s also hard to say whether or not Samaritan’s Purse was pressured in any way.
The left will certainly seize on any opportunity to spread their hatred for Christians. That, we can know.
(I see the situation with the illegals in much the same way.)

I am at a loss as to why Emory University Hospital was selected instead of the Plum Island facility. Does anyone know why an isolated facility built to handle dangerous pathogens was passed over in favor of a facility in the heart of a metropolitan city?

Ebola is going to break out of Africa, it is coming to Europe and the USA. Most likely it is already in both places. Inner city US hospitals can not cope.

The last add to the total was less than 100. That’s how you can tell...

They never get the new infections right, but they can count the deaths pretty well.

Just common sense,,,

I would not worry about these sporadic reports of “potential” infections.

They report them as they arise due to travel in the region. So far none have proved to be positive. It’s mostly out of a abundance of caution, which is something that we do in all cases of infection or contamination of travelers.

If, by chance someone were not to report their illness, and got sick with Ebola, you would know it...But as some have tried in vain to explain to you, this is not “Captain Trips”.

In the US, it would not do as much damage as it is in Africa, which by comparison with other biologics, it is not even a front runner in Africa.

That is why it has continued to pop up from time to time there, and then burn it’s self out.

Emory houses one of 4 special isolation units, the one at Emory was designed 12 years ago to treat CDC employees for this kind of thing.
