On a serious note, we could ask why so many African countries are basket cases. In years past the problems were blamed on the legacy of colonialism. But those countries have been independent countries for decades now. They have been self governing without any former colonial powers running things. Some of those countries have incredible natural resources, yet are economic basket cases. Why?

Because they prefer to be mis-governed by their own people(s) than well governed by another.

But, to be fair, I think that reasoning probably applies to just about everybody.
