What exactly are the rules that churches must abide by to maintain their tax exempt status? I have the feeling they'll vary by which bureaucrat is sitting in judgement.

It limits political speech according to the IRS rules. Exactly: opening yourself up to government extortion.

Party affiliations, it’s not the IRS business.
Calls for violence should be monitored. Mosques will be protected and churches will be persecuted.

They meant this for evil, but perhaps God means this for good. It will be good for those godless atheists to hear some sermons. Perhaps it will cause them to think. Perhaps the Holy Spirit will convict them and they will come to know the Lord.
That is what I will be praying is the outcome.

Stalin would be enthused about this. This sort of intimidation is right up his alley.

No doubt they will also scrutinize the black churches for telling their members who to vote for. /sarc>

If the IRS was serious about taxation, it would go after welfare queens for tax evasion. They have become a KGB.

I think it was the E.P.A. that was getting sued over different policies they couldn’t do on their own by “friendly environmental groups. Once it any to court they’d surrender without a real fight and create the policy they couldn’t get any way on their own plus have the defense they lost in court. I suspect this is a similar case as part of peeping the battlefield for 2016.

Thank God the REAL CHURCH doesn't confine itself, nor can it be defined by one sermon on a Sunday morning.
We'll have a men's meeting at my place, and there's all kinds of topics we can get into.

don’t let them intimidate the churches into silence.
start giving full blown proper sermons. tell the truth about abortion and the moral decay of the country.
and let fedgov bring the churches to court. let the try and explain how there is a separation of church and state as well as religious liberty... as long as the churches say nothing.
force them to justify their attacks

Churches need to just pay the taxes, and we need to leave our tithes and offerings off of our tax returns and just pay the taxes. As long as the same rule applies across the board to the entire non-profit sector, ok.
The left wants to penalize and, if possible, suppress conservative voices in the public arena. There is NO pressure to impose similar rules on political activism by left of center nonprofits. That's the tell.

I agree. Unions and al those “non-profit” leftwing group that are very very partisan also need to pay up.
Besides a small church would never have to do anything taxable.

And as well, perhaps, churches will remove their muzzle (I mean give up their 501c status) and regain the freedom of the pulpit.

Our church was never a 501 (c)(3) non-profit, which status requires sending in an application with (now) a $400 or $850 processing fee, then waiting up to 18 months for a decision. It would be the height of folly for a church ever to apply for such a restrictive status anyway. Did you know they have up to a 300% penalty for "self-dealing?" (essentially, taking money out by insiders without provable good cause).
It would be far better NOT to apply to the government (IRS) for their permission to be a non-profit that happens to be a church. Just be a Constitutionally-protected church.

“They want to control churches just like China.”
I wish we had more evidence that they don’t. This regime’s positions on abortion, contraception, “gay marriage”, and socilaism are totally at odds with Catholic teaching, yet they easily carry Catholic areas due to either the neglect or collaboration of the hierarchy.
The Democrats learned well from Red China.
