America, Ebola, and Fear: Overblown Panic in America
National Review ^ | 08/02/2014 | Dr. MARC SIEGEL

Posted on 08/02/2014 7:18:35 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

America, the land of the free, the home of the brave, is in a social-media panic because Dr. Kent Brantly, the 33-year-old Indiana physician who contracted Ebola while battling it in Liberia, is coming home as he struggles to hang onto life. This fear-laden response to a true American hero is out of touch with the fundamental principles of this country.

The Internet is afire with protest, and the misleading headlines stating that Ebola is being brought to the U.S. spread more fear but no understanding or empathy.

Brantly himself makes me proud to be both an American and a physician, and reminds me of the fearless battle against HIV/AIDS in the 1980s, when we took personal risks to care for the sick and the dying. A family friend describes him as caring more for others than for himself. This kind of altruism and courage is becoming rare these days, among physicians and society in general, but it is just as important now as it was in the 1980s, if not more so.

That is great that you feel that way, Dr. Siegal.

Now, go volunteer to help take care of this man.

No rumor is true until the government denies it...

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

Yeah; let him put his feet where his ideals are. Americans are living in fear of Ebola because we know all too well what will happen once it starts spreading.

The majority of people in medicine are; they prefer to spend more time researching AIDS rather than Ebola. AIDS often comes to someone via choice (I’m not including assault or marital infidelity) and is more a lifestyle disease. Ebola is not and infects more innocents. I am more and more shocked at what a complete ignorant disgrace our medical experts are.

The goal of Agenda 21 is to reduce the human population down to five hundred million.

Almost all mainstream media organizations are on board with Agenda 21. If NR is downplaying the ebola threat then they are practicing NWO taqiyya.

I dunno about Agenda 21, but I do know that our government officials are going to get us killed through their uselessness. We elect them to deal with this stuff competently, but the idiots are worse than useless.

What's misleading?? Unless Brantly is flying his own airplane, he and Ebola are indeed "being brought to the U.S."

Our current government bleeds corruption and incompetence and were supposed to trust them? They couldn’t handle building a website (Obamacare) nevermind something as deadly as Ebola.

Yeah, thanks doc. I think fear is justified in this case.

Most of these extremely deadly pathogens grow weaker as time goes by.

(See the book “Plague Time” by Paul Ewald.)

Sooner or later, this evolutionary tendency to weaken — plus the likely development of a vaccine — will probably consign Ebola to the dustbin of history.

There has never been a case of Ebola in the US, until now.

Great thinking Obama.

Others have come home too, not sick but maybe just not sick yet. And the CDC is sending 50 more Americans there.

Could get a lot worse...

This is the same disease that DOCTORS, taking all precautions, have still contracted.

A virus that all the references on say the infective load (i.e. number of individual virus particles to infect) are 1 to 10.

In a nation where few, if any doctors and nurses have any experience recognizing, much less diagnosing, a hemmorhagic fever.

And a government reassuring us, that left SMALLPOX in a closet for 50 years.

Prudence is the logical course here. . .

Yes, but things might happen another way. Americans have an odd habit of rising to the occasion. I mean, I believe in Americans as a people and believe that we have the moxie to meet this disaster head on.
