Part of CMC ER roped off, officials say patient being tested
WSOCTV ^ | 07/30/14

Posted on 07/30/2014 9:08:49 AM PDT by Enlightened1

A corridor of Carolinas Medical Center – Main’s Emergency Room is roped off on the first floor near the entrance.

A security guard is posted outside to prevent anyone from crossing the line.

CMC officials said a patient is being tested, but a spokesman would not specify what they are testing the patient for.

Wednesday morning, the issue at CMC was not impacting Medic services, according to officials.

The hospital is taking “all normal precautions,” according to officials.

The Centers for Disease Control said it has not been contacted.

Lots of stories/info running around, especially with something as terrifying as Ebola ..... the way ‘the news’ is these days, it’s hard to know what to believe and how to keep it all straight!

It is infectious, not contagious. If it ever became contagious, the borders would be shut down all over the world, and travel would cease immediately.

I fail to see how acknowledging Ebola is an often fatal disease and yes is worse than mild dehydration is panicking. But whatever

I didn’t say it isn’t fatal but if you’re going to lie, don’t waste my time.

"It is infectious, not contagious. "

What is the difference? Certainly the dictionary did not help me distinguish between the two.

This is what the CDC says (which sounds like what I learned years ago, before Obama):

Infectious disease: a disease caused by a microorganism and therefore potentially infinitely transferable to new individuals. May or may not be communicable. Example of non communicable is disease caused by toxins from food poisoning or infection caused by toxins in the environment, such as tetanus.

Communicable disease: an infectious disease that is contagious and which can be transmitted from one source to another by infectious bacteria or viral organisms.

Contagious disease: a very communicable disease capable of spreading rapidly from one person to another by contact or close proximity.

Isn't the term you're looking for "airborne" and not simply "contagious".

Epidemiologically or not, the textbook definition of contagious is as follows:

con·ta·gious [kuhn-tey-juhs]

1. capable of being transmitted by bodily contact with an infected person or object: contagious diseases.
2.carrying or spreading a contagious disease.
3.tending to spread from person to person: contagious laughter.

This is a contagious disease, I have seen several epidemiologists state exactly that. I have also seen them state that if this was airborne, it would become a pandemic and be unlike anything we have seen if it mutated and maintained the same mortality rate among the infected.

I did read a bit more and I believe it could be classified either way, but it sounds to be more technically infectious than “contagious”.

Honestly I think that’s picking nits a bit here, because people who know how to and are taking precautions are falling ill with Ebola, so I’d say we’ve crossed that rubicon.

That’s my $.02.

Maybe not many here ... yet.

The number will increase as we import more from parts of the world where both multiple drug resistant TB and highly contagious TB are prevalent.

In today's world, public health issues are more driven by political correctness, cheap votes, and cheap labor than common sense.

General usage dictionary definitions are not the same as those in technical lexicons.

Glad you kept reading.

I do still think that the difference is really just picking nits at this point though. Doctors wearing protective equipment and taking precautions are still getting sick.

Really, using correct and precise terminology is not nit picking to anyone in medicine or the sciences: "Oh, those are all just bosons of one kind or another".

Contagious: Capable of being transmitted via casual contact
Infectious: Requires direct contact via fluids or mucosal membranes.

Also, we don't know if the medical workers would have been infected had they been in U.S. facilities, with QC at multiple levels. Field work is very difficult and maintaining protocol during field work in third-world countries is extremely difficult.

So the idea that the Liberian government is now casting a net as wide as 30K people is simply hysteria then?
