AP ANALYSIS: Amid war, endgames in Gaza emerge

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) -- The savage fighting between Israel and Hamas is escalating in Gaza, cease-fire efforts take on elements of farce, and bravado rules the public discourse. But even through the fog of war, a few endgame scenarios can nonetheless be glimpsed.

For the moment, the deadlock is well-entrenched: As long as the crippling blockade of Gaza remains in place, Hamas says it will continue firing rockets at Israel - terrifying but mostly ineffectual, thanks to the "Iron Dome" defense system. Israel says the blockade must stay to stop a terrorist government from importing yet more weapons.

:snip:

While it is too early to say how all this will end, quiet diplomacy continues. There also is a growing sense that it can't go on much longer - but then again, it might.

Here are some ways it could play out:

ISRAEL DECLARES VICTORY AND LEAVES

If you listen carefully, Israeli leaders generally describe the ground operation in Gaza as intended to destroy the Hamas-built tunnels leading into Israel, almost certainly for purposes of attack. The military says it has found and is destroying more than 20 tunnels and believes there are a few more. Once that job is done, Israel could well pull out and try to declare victory or even a unilateral cease-fire. The hope would be that the respite from the devastation visited on Gaza would compel Hamas to think again and quietly accept a return to the way it was: no rocket fire on Israel; no airstrikes and shelling of Gaza. This probably wouldn't work. Hamas has put Gazans through so much that they certainly feel they must have...

I suggest that overthrowing Hamas makes more sense than letting the Palestinian Authority control a border.

I'm shocked to discover that an AP writer who has been covering the Middle East for many years is a clueless fart. Aren't you?

There is no point in Moslems inhabiting any part of the Holy Land, let alone having any autonomy there. There is no "peace" for a people with no culture of work. Fatah, or whatever they're calling themselves this year, are no different from Hamas in the end. They are just gangsters who hit up their own people and suckers from the UN for protection money. It's what they do. The only solution is the bulldozer.

As long as the crippling blockade of Gaza remains in place

I'm curious, what warrants calling it a 'crippling blockade'?

Good question.

The ‘crippling blockade’ means that Hamas can’t import the good stuff: they have to resort to homemade rockets that fly all over the place and hit their own hospitals and schools.

Israel’s fault!

I agree re your point about Moslems inhabiting any part of the greater Israel area. That’s called a “fundamental”.

Fundamentally the paradigm has to shift from ACCOMODATION to MOVE!

The “so called” Palestinians, NEVER having had any legal claim to ANY real estate in the area need to disseminate into other Mid East countries if the “fundamentals” are going to be addressed. But, this constant state of war serves MANY interests. The Saudis love it because “the Jews” are their scapegoat to stay in power. Jordan loves it because they don’t want this “class” of people in their country. The western world is cowardly and loves it so they can curry favor with wild eyed muzzie terrorists!

“The War” also consumes billions and billions of war material and employs thousands in Israel and around the world. These suppliers are a powerful interest that must be dealt with.

So, there is no possible way this “state of war” is going to go away in this century because it is in the interest of “the world” to ignore the FUNDAMENTALS !

There is only one way that this will end and that’s the complete, total and utter destruction if Hamas. And f it takes levelling all if Gaza to do it then so be it.
