The Financial Times reports that a drop in ad sales at the New York Times caused the left-wing newspaper's profits to collapse 54% in the second quarter of this year.

[Snip]

A fall in advertising revenues and stepped-up investment in digital products outweighed rises in digital subscribers and circulation revenue at the New York Times, sending headline profit 54 per cent lower in the second quarter.

Ah yes, the “paper of record” that endorsed both Walter Mondale and Mike Dukakis...

It’s hard to say whether a gruesome death by Timothy McVeigh or a slow, painful death by the free market would be better for the NYT. Either is fine.

But does the drudge report smell like dirty day old wet paper from sitting in the gutter?

They’ll figure out a way to keep it going. If not Pinch, then someone else. It’s TITF (too important to fail)

“Let them fail. Their tears will be delicious.”

Unfortunately, I’ve been reading about the Slimes double digit losses in ad revenue for at least ten years and yet, there they are, still spewing out their Leftist pap unabated. I am just wondering how long it will be before it really has to close it’s doors? They seem to be like the government, despite mounting debt, they are able to kick their own can down the road and stay in business.

"...their operating model doesn’t fare well in the Internet age..."

As these papers like NYT and WaPo start finally dying the painful death they deserve the fitting outcome is not for them to just gracefully disappear, but for their editors and new manufacturers to be scorned, humiliated and shunned in the process.

Them, and the AP. I pointed out to my kids that the headlines in every paper in the US are the same, day after day after day. Setting aside extraordinary events (man lands on the moon, 9/11 attack, etc.), the probability of all editors at all papers finding the same stories to be "most important" is approximately zero. Therefore, the evidence (same headline story at every paper across the US) shows that the papers are not independent when it comes to choosing what to report and how much importance to attach to each story.

I have also found several instances where AP makes up stories from whole cloth. Literally, fiction being reported as a news event.

I hope so; I fear they will be re-tooled to simply spew the leftist bile online (where they may find the audience they lost in the print media).
